While Avatar: Fire and Ash performed well in theaters, its earnings didn’t quite meet director James Cameron’s expectations. This sparked concerns that future Avatar movies might be cancelled, but Cameron recently shared encouraging news about the franchise’s plans.
I was so excited to hear James Cameron finally talk about the future of Avatar at the Saturn Awards! He didn’t make any promises, but he said Avatar 4 is “very likely” to happen, which is fantastic news. He also mentioned he’s really listening to what fans think about where the story should go. While it’s not a definite yes just yet, and there’s still a chance the series might end with three films, I’m feeling really optimistic that we’ll get to see more of Pandora!
Avatar: Fire and Ash Made Less Than Expected
The new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, came out in theaters on December 19, 2025. While it’s expected to earn a significant amount of money at the box office, it’s projected to make less than the previous Avatar films. The original Avatar from 2009 remains the highest-grossing movie ever, earning $2.92 billion. And in 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water became the third-highest-grossing film with $2.32 billion.
Let’s be upfront: the latest Avatar movie isn’t performing as well as its predecessor, The Way of Water, falling short by nearly $1 billion. This could indicate a decline in the series’ popularity. Disney is likely worried that Avatar 4 might see another big drop in ticket sales, making it less profitable. These films are incredibly costly to make – Fire and Ash reportedly cost over $400 million to produce, plus another $200 million for marketing.
Critical Reception for Avatar Has Declined
There’s growing concern that the fourth Avatar movie might not perform as well as previous installments, as each film in the series has seen decreasing approval ratings. The original Avatar earned an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Way of Water dropped to 76%, and Fire and Ash received 66%. Fortunately, the third film was more popular with general audiences, scoring a 90% on Popcornmeter. While most viewers seem to enjoy the Avatar films, Disney will be hoping for strong ticket sales with the fourth release.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is the latest film in the Avatar series. Director James Cameron has plans for five movies total, but the fourth and fifth installments haven’t been officially approved yet. Cameron said last year that he intends to direct those next two films himself, if his health allows.
He explained to Empire that he needs to approach his work with a lot of energy and stamina to keep it up for another six or seven years. He’s not sure if he’ll be able to maintain that level of intensity, but he’s willing to try.
