Winter 2026 has been an exceptionally strong season for anime, featuring popular shows like Sentenced to Be a Hero and the second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. From action-packed shonen to fantasy isekai, romance, and everything in between, the season has consistently offered fantastic series.
Not all anime shows are successful. While many quickly gain and keep a large fanbase, others struggle. Some shows lose viewers after people try them, and others start strong but decline quickly, sometimes within just one season. While these series might improve and regain popularity, they currently represent the biggest disappointments.
Dark Moon: The Blood Altar Lacks Direction and Motivation
When I started at Decelis Academy, I noticed seven guys seemed really interested in this new student, Sooha. She’s got some incredible powers, but she really doesn’t like vampires. It was a surprise, then, to find out all seven of them are vampires! Things started getting weird fast, and it became clear someone was trying to protect Sooha, keeping her powers and who she is a secret from everyone.
I was really drawn in at first! The animation is beautiful, and the story started strong enough to grab my attention. But honestly, the more I watched Dark Moon: The Blood Altar, the more things started to fall apart. It just feels… directionless, like it doesn’t really know what it’s trying to be. And it’s hard to shake the feeling that it’s more about promoting Enhypen – the vampire characters are all based on the members, which feels a little strange and takes away from the story itself.
Kunon the Sorcerer Can See Doesn’t Explore Blindness Enough
In Kunon the Sorcerer Can See, a sorcerer who is blind learns to perceive the world around him in unique ways. The story explores how magic can empower someone with a disability, following Kunon’s journey to become the most powerful sorcerer. He hopes to one day restore his sight using water magic, all while honing his skills and learning from his teachers.
The main weakness of Kunon the Sorcerer Can See is that its blind protagonist, Kunon Gurion, doesn’t feel realistically vulnerable. He consistently overcomes challenges effortlessly, making his progress and skill development seem unearned and too quick. His blindness feels more like a characteristic than a genuine obstacle he struggles with.
Hana-Kimi Fails to Deliver on High Expectations
It’s fair to say the series has had a difficult beginning. The premise – a girl named Mizuki Ashiya disguising herself to attend an all-boys school and get closer to high jumper Izumi Sano – is interesting. The story is generally easy to follow, and the initial tension of Mizuki almost being discovered creates some drama, but this doesn’t hold viewers’ attention for long.
The anime version of this story, despite having a charming premise and a well-developed love triangle between Mizuki, Sano, and Nakatsu in the original manga, feels very rushed. A key storyline about Sano’s hesitation to return to high jump is resolved far too quickly. The anime tries to cover too much ground, ultimately losing what made the manga so enjoyable.
Roll Over and Die Falls Flat on Its Face in Season 1
The comic series Roll Over and Die had a promising start. It centers around Flum Apricot, a young girl with a unique ability called Reversal. After being sold into slavery because her power is seen as troublesome, Flum realizes she can actually transform negative energy into strength. This discovery, along with the help of Milkit – a fellow slave she rescued – gives Flum the power to fight powerful creatures.
The story is captivating, and the sweet, developing relationship between Flum and Milkit is genuinely charming. However, the anime’s production quality, especially during action scenes, is a major drawback. Rushed and poorly animated sequences make some episodes difficult to watch, even though they contain important plot points, and this unfortunately discourages many viewers who were enjoying the story.
Trigun Stargaze Contributes Little to The Trigun Franchise
The newest installment in the Trigun series, Trigun Stargaze, gives fans a fresh perspective on Vash the Stampede’s story. Set 18 months after the events of Lost July, the series pits Vash against his brother, Millions Knives, in a significant battle. Vash has vowed to never kill again, but Millions Knives is determined to destroy humanity.
If you’re new to the Trigun story or don’t worry about connections to past series, Trigun Stargaze is worth checking out. But dedicated fans might be disappointed. The show changes established storylines and feels aimless, causing many to lose interest after just a few episodes. Ultimately, it doesn’t quite live up to expectations for those familiar with the original.
Wash It All Away Raises Concern Over Problematic Themes
Most slice-of-life anime don’t center around laundry services, but Wash It All Away is different. For two years, Wakana Kinme has run a peaceful laundry business at a busy seaside resort. This anime, geared towards young men, had the potential to be a truly unique and memorable series in 2026.
The anime version unfortunately gets bogged down in excessive fan service and includes some awkward and inappropriate scenes with young characters. It could have been a charming story about Wakana learning to manage a business and enjoying everyday life, but instead, it focuses on putting her in embarrassing and uncomfortable situations. Overall, it’s probably best to avoid this adaptation.
Dead Account Proves Quality Animation Can’t Mask Poor Storytelling
Dead Account is a surprisingly compelling series. It centers around Souji Enishiro, a streamer who intentionally creates controversial content online to gain views and income. While he appears to be just a troublemaker, he actually uses the money to pay for his sister’s medical treatment. The story and animation quality alone make Dead Account worth watching.
As more episodes of Dead Account are released, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the show lacks substance. The conversations feel empty and often repeat the same ideas, making it feel dull. It might be okay if you just want something simple to watch, but viewers looking for a show with real depth will likely be disappointed.
Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers Feels Rushed and Underdeveloped
This season has been particularly strong for anime, and this show really shines. Studio Sunrise delivered fantastic animation, especially in the action sequences, and the music effectively heightened the emotional impact of key scenes.
However, after just a few minutes, most viewers will notice the show’s problems quickly become more noticeable than its strengths. The storylines feel hurried, the characters aren’t very developed and their actions don’t feel impactful, and the action sequences are surprisingly weak for a show that’s supposed to be full of action.
Noble Reincarnation: Born Blessed, So I’ll Obtain Ultimate Power Suffers From Poor Writing
Readers who enjoy stories about powerful characters might be interested in Noble Reincarnation: Born Blessed, So I’ll Obtain Ultimate Power, but it’s more complex than it appears. The series follows Noah Ararat, a six-year-old with incredible abilities who can learn any skill. While the premise suggests a fun, easy-to-follow story, the book’s issues ultimately overshadow the interesting concept of its main character.
Noah comes across as trying too hard to be cool, and the story consistently feels rushed. Noble Reincarnation: Born Blessed, So I’ll Obtain Ultimate Power focuses almost entirely on Noah, leaving potentially interesting side characters underdeveloped. The biggest problem, though, is that the story throws around too many ideas at once, making each episode feel chaotic and directionless.
