James Cameron, the director of Avatar, recently discussed the possibility of making Avatar 4. While the initial Avatar trilogy has finished, the story isn’t over, as plans for both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are underway. Although the Avatar films have been hugely successful, approving these expensive sequels became more complicated when Avatar: Fire and Ash didn’t perform as well at the box office as expected, despite still earning over $1 billion.
James Cameron recently shared at the Saturn Awards (according to Screen Rant) that he hasn’t made a final decision about creating Avatar 4, but he thinks it’s probably going to happen. He also plans to take fan reactions into account as he develops the next movie in the hugely successful Avatar series.
Even though Avatar: The Way of Water concluded the central story of Jake and his family, many believe there are still stories to be told about the ongoing struggle between Pandora and Earth. However, James Cameron and his team will need to find ways to make the next film more quickly and affordably.
Fortunately, progress is being made to streamline the production of future Avatar films. In a January 2026 interview with TVBS News, Cameron explained the need to find ways to make the movies at a lower cost.
“We have to do well, and we need to figure out how to make Avatar movies more inexpensively.”
As a huge fan of the Avatar films, I’ve been following news about Avatar 4 closely. While we don’t know exactly what James Cameron and his team are doing behind the scenes, their willingness to push forward, and his talk about listening to what audiences want, makes me really confident they’re giving it their all. Plus, the fact that Avatar: The Way of Water recently surpassed Frozen 2 at the box office proves these films still have incredible staying power and people are still eager to see more.
What Avatar 4’s Story Will Look Like

The fourth Avatar movie is set to begin a new storyline, with James Cameron revealing it will take place eight years after the previous film. This makes sense given how the last movie ended, which suggests a greater focus on the children – Lo’ak, Kiri, Spider, and Tuk – and their future adventures.
Starting a new storyline would allow the world of Pandora to grow, featuring different Na’vi tribes and potentially creating new conflicts. It would also explore how the RDA, the company defeated by Jake Sully and the Na’vi, changes and adapts after its loss.
The next Avatar movie will likely continue to emphasize the strong bonds of family, potentially even showing Jake Sully and Neytiri as grandparents if their son, Lo’ak, becomes a father. This could create dramatic tension, as their grandchildren would be vulnerable to enemies. The film may also delve further into Kiri’s unique connection to Eywa and explore the challenges and possibilities of Spider’s mixed Na’vi and human heritage.
