Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Twists Beverly & Jack Crusher Story

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 9 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “300th Night.” The show cleverly expands on the mother-son dynamic between Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), first explored in Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. Directed by Jonathan Frakes and written by Kirsten Beyer (based on a story by Beyer and Kenneth Lin), this second-to-last episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s first season brings back the character Anisha Mir, played by Tatiana Maslany.

Anisha Mir disappeared at the very beginning of the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series, when the United Federation of Planets took her into custody. This separated her from her young son, Caleb Mir (played by Sandro Rosta), thanks to the actions of Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter). Throughout his time adjusting to life at Starfleet Academy, Caleb’s biggest goal was to find his mother.

In the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9, Caleb located Anisha on Ukeck, a planet beyond Federation territory that was quickly taken over by the Venari Ral. Caleb, Anisha, and his friends from the Academy were immediately threatened by the Venari Ral, but Captain Ake and the USS Athena arrived to save them. This brought Anisha face-to-face with the person who had imprisoned her sixteen years prior.

Starfleet Academy’s Caleb and Anisha Mir Reverse Star Trek: Picard’s Jack and Beverly Crusher

The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, features a strong mother-son dynamic that immediately reminded viewers of Beverly Crusher and Jack in Star Trek: Picard’s third season. Both Caleb and Jack were raised by single mothers away from traditional Federation society. Similar to how Jack learned medicine and healing from Dr. Crusher, Caleb’s exceptional technical talents are clearly inherited from his mother.

When Beverly Crusher was pregnant with Jack, her main goal was to protect him from anyone who might target his father, Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Unlike Anisha Mir, who wasn’t able to raise her son Caleb into adulthood, Beverly was with Jack until he was grown. The reasons behind Beverly’s secrecy about Jack and Anisha’s strained relationship with her Starfleet Captain, Nahla Ake, are very different.

Caleb was fortunate to avoid inheriting any negative traits from the father he never knew. Jack, however, unknowingly carried Borg DNA passed down from Picard. Jean-Luc rescued Jack from a future as the Borg’s Vox. Caleb is free to choose his own path, and he’s found it in Starfleet, though he still struggles with feeling like the lost, orphaned child he once was, always searching for his mother.

As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I found the motivations of both Anisha Mir and Beverly Crusher really compelling. It’s not just about wanting something different for their sons; it’s deep-seated distrust of the Federation itself. For Anisha, it’s totally understandable – the Federation of the future basically wrecked her life and took her son away. And Beverly’s reasons are heartbreaking too. She lived through the fallout of the Mars attack, and saw the Federation turn inward, prioritizing its own safety over helping billions of people in need. It really showed a darker side to the organization we usually see as this beacon of hope.

Jack Crusher & Caleb’s Mir’s Destinies Are In Starfleet

When details emerged about Caleb and Anisha Mir in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, some viewers thought their story mirrored that of Jack and Beverly Crusher in Star Trek: Picard season 3. However, Caleb Mir isn’t simply a copy of Jack Crusher, and their mothers are very different characters as well.

Both Jack Crusher and Caleb Mir are destined for careers in Starfleet, even though their mothers initially had concerns. By the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3, Jack quickly completed Starfleet Academy in just one year and became Ensign Jack Crusher, serving as a special counselor to Captain Seven of Nine aboard the USS Enterprise-G.

At the end of the ninth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Caleb Mir is facing a difficult decision: follow the path his mother wants for him, or forge his own way in Starfleet, where he sees a brighter future and a chance to help others. He’s potentially damaged his relationships with his friends, and while he might leave Starfleet, a return in season two remains a possibility.

Mother-son stories are still relatively rare in the world of Star Trek, and it’s interesting that Star Trek: Picard season 3 and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy both feature a central mother-son relationship. Like Jack Crusher, Caleb Mir will probably become a Starfleet officer someday, but it’s uncertain if his mother, Anisha, will be as supportive as Beverly Crusher.
