I’m really glad to see people discovering this show! It originally came out on HBO and Sky UK back in 2019, but it’s been quietly gaining a new audience thanks to being available on PVOD. It’s a five-part limited series, and honestly, after seven years, it’s holding up really well – it’s great to see it get another moment in the spotlight.

The series Chernobyl is gaining popularity on Apple TV in several countries, currently ranking as high as No. 4 in France, No. 5 in the UK, and No. 9 in Germany, according to FlixPatrol. In the US, you can find it streaming on HBO Max.

Chernobyl Drew Universal Praise Upon Release

When it first came out in 2019, the disaster series was a huge success. It received almost 20 nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards and won several, including Outstanding Limited Series. Chernobyl Is Based on a Real-Life Disaster

Created by Craig Mazin (known for The Last of Us), this series depicts the 1986 nuclear disaster and the extensive cleanup that followed. It focuses on the experiences of those directly involved – from the first responders like firefighters and volunteers, to the miners who worked tirelessly to dig a tunnel beneath the reactor.

The miniseries Chernobyl was widely praised for its historical accuracy, although some details were likely changed to make the story more compelling. Creator Craig Mazin conducted thorough research to ensure the show didn’t contain major inaccuracies, aiming for a final product that felt as realistic as possible.

Early in the research process, I immediately went to USC to consult with a nuclear physicist. I continued talking to scientists throughout the project. I also made sure to speak with people who grew up in Soviet Ukraine and were living there during the disaster, to ensure the story was culturally accurate. My goal was to avoid making careless mistakes and show respect for the truth.
