There’s a lot of excitement building for the new movie, Project Hail Mary, with many critics predicting it will be a major hit in 2026. Star Ryan Gosling is generating buzz by hosting Saturday Night Live, where he’s been making audiences laugh. He also recently did an interview with MovieWeb.
In the science fiction novel Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a former molecular biologist who now teaches middle school. He’s unexpectedly recruited to join a team of the world’s top scientists to tackle a huge crisis: the sun, and many other stars, are fading, threatening life as we know it. Ryland is sent on a mission into space to study a star that seems immune to this phenomenon, and there he encounters another investigator – Rocky, a clever, spider-like alien engineer – who is working on the same problem.
In the movie Project Hail Mary, the future of several worlds hangs in the balance, but at its heart is the touching friendship between Ryland and Rocky, characters from different planets. MovieWeb asked Ryan Gosling what Ryland gains from his relationship with Rocky. Gosling explained, “I think he finally has someone worth sacrificing everything for. He forms many connections throughout the film, but none as profound as this—it’s a friendship that transcends worlds.”
A friendship like that is incredibly powerful and can deeply move people – even make them cry. Ryan Gosling has actually heard stories of audience members crying while watching Project Hail Mary, and he thinks it’s a wonderful thing.
I’ve been hearing a lot about ‘grown men crying’ – the idea that it’s unusual for adult men to show emotion. But it’s actually very true; a huge part of what makes this movie powerful is its emotional depth.
The movie Project Hail Mary is based on the popular novel by Andy Weir, who also wrote The Martian. The Martian was a successful 2015 science fiction film starring Matt Damon, and it cleverly combined grand sci-fi adventure with heartfelt emotion and humor. If Project Hail Mary captures some of that same magic, it’s easy to see why people are already calling it one of the best films of the year.
