All ‘Scream’ Ghostfaces, Ranked by How Easy They Are To Figure Out

The movie Scream famously began in 1996 with Casey Becker simply making popcorn and answering the phone—a scene that quickly turned terrifying. Drew Barrymore’s performance in that opening is considered one of the most iconic in horror movie history. It also introduced us to the killer, Ghostface. For the past 30 years, fans have been captivated by the Scream franchise and the ongoing pursuit of Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell). But through all the sequels, the central mystery always remains: who is behind the Ghostface mask?

With Scream 7 now out and showing Sidney Prescott settled in Indiana with her family, it’s a good time to look back at every killer from the Scream movies. Let’s grab some popcorn, dim the lights, and discuss who was easy to figure out, and who kept us guessing! We’re ranking all of the Ghostface killers, from the most mysterious to the most predictable.

15
Stu Macher (‘Scream’)

Dimension Films

Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard, is this writer’s favorite Ghostface and is considered one of the most surprising killers in the Scream movies. Though he appears as a goofy and playful character—and is even Tatum Riley’s (Rose McGowan) boyfriend—Stu seems an unlikely candidate for a violent murderer.

While Stu Macher is a memorable character from the original 1996 Scream film, his recent storyline in the latest movie wasn’t very good. Let’s just move past that and remember his fantastic final scene in the first film, where he’s concerned about how his parents will react to his actions.

14
Roman Bridger (‘Scream 3’)

Dimension Films

Many fans think Roman Bridger, who played Ghostface, wasn’t very convincing. But did you realize the director of Scream 3, also known as Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro, was actually the killer in the most recent attacks?

It’s possible some viewers figured it out, but others didn’t, and that’s understandable. Looking back now, after the third movie came out, it seems obvious that Sidney would have a previously unknown half-sibling revealed as Ghostface. However, when Scream 3 was first released, it was hard to predict that Roman’s story went deeper than just a typical aspiring filmmaker.

13
Nancy Loomis (‘Scream 2’)

Dimension Films

In the Scream sequel, Billy’s mother, Nancy Loomis (played by Laurie Metcalf), disguises herself as a reporter named Debbie Salt. Was it obvious to anyone that she was pretending?

Even if audiences didn’t fully understand everything happening, Nancy remains an important character in the Scream series. Her intense scene at the end of Scream 2 is still genuinely frightening, and it powerfully illustrates the lasting trauma caused by the murder of Sidney’s mother.

12
Marco Davis (‘Scream 7’)

Paramount Pictures

Marco Davis, played by Ethan Embry, isn’t a masterfully clever killer. When audiences first learned he was one of the killers in Scream 7, most probably weren’t shocked – just accepted it. While he wasn’t as immediately obvious as some other killers in the series, he also wasn’t particularly thrilling.

11
Charlie Walker (‘Scream 4’)

Dimension Films

Was it obvious to you that Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin) was a ruthless killer, or did his innocent act fool you? Charlie is a surprisingly complex villain. While his friendly demeanor makes him appear guilty, the Scream franchise has a history of the most likable characters turning out to be the most dangerous. It’s often only on a second viewing that you notice the subtle clues hinting at Charlie’s true nature and how unnervingly nice he really is.

10
Jill Roberts (‘Scream 4’)

Dimension Films

Similar to Charlie’s reveal, the fact that Jill Roberts (played by Emma Roberts) was the killer was a surprise when the movie came out, but feels less shocking now that it’s been over ten years since the film was released. While some viewers might have predicted that Sidney’s cousin would betray her for a taste of fame, others were completely unaware of how dangerous Jill actually was.

9
Amber Freeman (‘Scream 2022’)

Paramount Pictures

The 2022 film Scream left viewers wondering if the new Ghostface killer would be someone connected to Sidney Prescott, or a completely unknown character with their own motives. Many fans were surprised by the reveal that Amber Freeman (played by Mikey Madison) was one of the killers. She’s largely remembered for her fiery demise in a kitchen – a particularly painful exit!

8
Billy Loomis (‘Scream’)

Billy Loomis’s reveal as Ghostface in the original Scream is complicated to revisit. Because he’s become so iconic within the franchise over time, it’s easy to forget how surprising it was. While some viewers were genuinely stumped, the movie subtly hinted at his involvement, making the eventual confession of his motives less of a shock.

Billy’s secret relationship with Sidney’s mother, Maureen Prescott, was a shocking reveal, and difficult to notice on a first viewing. He was incredibly close to Sidney – almost as close as her best friend, Tatum. He knew details about her life, like when her dad was away, and he even went to school with her. Looking back at the movie Scream now, it’s clear that Billy being the killer makes perfect sense.

7
Mickey Altieri (‘Scream 2’)

Dimension Films

Just a fun fact: Timothy Olyphant was in the second Scream movie! Though he’s known for Westerns, he played Sidney’s college friend, Mickey Altieri – one of the killers (Ghostface) alongside Debbie/Nancy.

Anyone familiar with the Scream movies knows that people close to Sidney often turn out to be enemies. Because of this, many fans suspect Mickey. There are several reasons why – he was overly nice to Sidney when she was in the hospital, and he disappears for a significant portion of the movie, which raises red flags.

6
Richie Kirsch (‘Scream 2022’)

Paramount Pictures

Richie Kirsch immediately felt like a Ghostface suspect, likely due to the history with Billy. After Sidney discovered her boyfriend was the killer in the original Scream, it wasn’t shocking that Sam Carpenter’s (Melissa Barrera) boyfriend would also turn out to be one of the two Ghostfaces in the latest film.

Richie seems like a genuinely good guy, but knowing how the Scream movies – and horror movies in general – love to mislead you, it’s hard to fully trust him. No offense to Jack Quaid, who is a fantastic actor!
