Okay, so the buzz about Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is officially confirmed: The Punisher is back, and he’s central to the story. We saw Jon Bernthal reprise his incredible role as Frank Castle in the first season, and it was a smart move. The writers immediately threw a curveball, showing us that the crooked cops of New York had taken his iconic skull symbol – a seriously bold move! He ultimately stepped in to help a battered Daredevil fight these same corrupt officers and Wilson Fisk’s new anti-vigilante task force, but things didn’t go his way. Let’s just say Frank’s currently enjoying an extended stay in a very secure prison…for now. It’s a great setup for what’s to come.
The comic storyline Born Again showed that the Punisher was using an office in the Knickerbocker Village apartment complex in New York City as his base of operations. He kept his weapons there, monitored possible enemies on a bulletin board, and generally ran his activities as the Punisher from that location.

According to the cast list for the upcoming season of Born Again, Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, won’t be appearing as a character in Season 2 alongside Daredevil and Jessica Jones. However, a recent promotional image suggests his impact will still be felt, as it shows Matt Murdock (Daredevil) and Jessica Jones inside The Punisher’s former base.

The room is easily recognized by the lockers and shelves visible behind Murdock, suggesting he’s been using it as a hideout between seasons of Born Again whenever Castle is either in prison or on the run.

After the events of Born Again, Daredevil was a fugitive from Kingpin and building a team of vigilantes. It’s likely he’s now using the Punisher’s old hideout – either to avoid the AVTF task force or as a central base for his operations.
The changes to Daredevil and Karen Page in Season 2 show they’re constantly evading capture and operating in secret, so having a hidden, self-sufficient base is crucial. It seems Matt may have also removed some of the weapons from that base.
This groundwork will make sure the Punisher’s impact is still strongly felt even when Born Again returns for its second season on March 24th, even though the character won’t be present.
Why The Punisher Is Skipping Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
It doesn’t look like the Punisher will be back for a second season of Born Again. This is probably because Frank Castle, played by Jon Bernthal, is already scheduled to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and a separate special presentation on Disney+ this year.
The first season ended with the Punisher imprisoned in Wilson Fisk’s high-tech AVTF facility with other vigilantes. But a brief scene after the credits showed Frank Castle tricking and subduing a guard, hinting at his upcoming escape.
Originally, fans thought this hinted at the Punisher teaming up with Daredevil’s growing group of heroes, including Jessica Jones. However, it now appears Frank Castle will be focused on a separate conflict with mob boss Ma Gnucci in his upcoming Disney+ presentation.
Disney+ will stream the TV-MA Special Presentation at roughly the same time as the July release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This is intended to connect with the new Spider-Man release and, according to reports, will establish the storyline for the Punisher before his PG-13 series begins.
While fans would love to see Castle and Murdock team up again, it makes sense that Jon Bernthal wasn’t in Season 2. He was already committed to filming other Marvel projects that could have conflicted with the Born Again schedule, and adding too many heroes could have taken the focus away from Daredevil’s story.
With the Punisher now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to Born Again, it’s likely we’ll see him in other projects. This could pave the way for Jessica Jones to return as well. Moving forward, future seasons might focus on teaming Daredevil up with one or two other gritty, street-level heroes, bringing back the feel of the old Netflix Marvel shows.
