So far, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has brought back many characters we know and love – some we expected, like Jett Reno and the Doctor, and some delightful surprises, such as Jake Sisko and the newest version of Dax. However, the show hasn’t featured many ships; the USS Athena and the heavily damaged USS Miyazaki are the only ones that have played a significant role.
Since much of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place at the academy, it’s logical that the show feels somewhat cut off from the rest of Starfleet. However, as the series has gone on, the lack of other ships has become more and more apparent. The ending of episode 9 strongly suggests that the season one finale will have to introduce a familiar ship from Star Trek history.
How Starfleet Academy Has Avoided Showing The Discovery So Far
The final episode of Star Trek: Discovery revealed that Burnham continued to captain her ship for many years after the series concluded. Eventually, decades later, the Discovery was retired with a final, unmanned voyage into deep space.
The show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place earlier in the timeline, meaning Burnham’s ship, the Discovery, is still operating while Caleb and his classmates are getting into trouble and disobeying all the rules at the Academy.
During the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the ship Athena frequently needed assistance. It was noticeable that the Discovery, which can quickly travel anywhere thanks to its unique spore drive, wasn’t around to help with these emergencies, as it usually responds immediately to major distress signals.
I’ve been following the Discovery’s journey, and it’s been quite a ride! Just when things were getting interesting with Athena’s first trip, they ran into trouble with Nus Braka, and the Discovery was unfortunately in for repairs. Then, after the shocking events involving the USS Miyazaki, the crew jumped right into helping with the rescue. Honestly, though, it feels like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy keeps pulling them in different directions with new assignments, and it’s frustrating because it keeps delaying the main story! It’s like they can’t catch a break.
That actually makes a lot of sense. While it’s fine to show the Discovery spaceship itself in space, getting the actors from Star Trek: Discovery to make brief appearances feels unlikely given how small their parts would be. Plus, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is building its own cast of characters, and having major stars from Discovery show up would overshadow them.
Starfleet Academy’s Season 1 Finale Setup Makes A Discovery Cameo Very Difficult To Avoid
The ninth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ends with the villains, led by Nus Braka, creating a dangerous barrier of Omega 47 mines around Federation territory. This traps all of Starfleet’s ships, and attempting to break through the minefield would cause a massive explosion – potentially restarting the devastating event known as the Burn, Part II.
The Athena is the only ship facing the dangers beyond Braka’s explosive perimeter, having ventured out to save Caleb and the others who escaped. While Star Trek: Starfleet Academy hasn’t fully explained Nus Braka’s scheme, it’s clear he’s manipulating events to his advantage. Everything that’s happening has been carefully planned to cut off Captain Ake and the USS Athena from the rest of Starfleet, leaving them exposed and open to attack.
The Discovery’s unique drive system could be key here. Since it travels through a network of spores, it might be able to avoid the Omega 47 mines and reach the Athena, offering much-needed support. The rest of our fleet should be safe if it remains together, but right now, the Athena is the ship most at risk. This is worrying, especially since we’re unsure of Nus Braka’s plans.
With Captain Ake facing the Venari Ral alone, Admiral Vance’s only choice is to have Burnham pilot the Discovery through the blockade to help the Athena. Having two ships fight Nus Braka gives them a better chance, but even if they can’t win, Burnham can transport the Athena’s crew onto the Discovery and then jump to safety to rejoin the fleet.
Okay, let’s talk about the finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Honestly, having the Discovery swoop in to save the day feels a little…convenient. But the writers cleverly backed themselves into a corner. The situation they create is that the Discovery is genuinely the only ship that can help, and ignoring a distress call would be a huge strategic blunder. Plus, Jett Reno – a former Discovery officer – is stranded on the Athena, and you know Burnham wouldn’t abandon a friend. I fully expect to see Burnham defy direct orders to rescue the Athena, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she managed to pull it off and still make it back in time for a nice cup of tea!
