Tune in to the #NintendoDirect on Monday, March 9th at 2pm Pacific Time to see the final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This presentation will focus solely on the movie and won’t include any news about games.

I’m so excited – Nintendo said we can watch the stream right on their official YouTube and other social media channels, and even through the Nintendo Today! app on our phones! It’s going to be so easy to tune in!

Nintendo Expands the Mario Movie Universe

The new Super Mario Galaxy movie is the next big step for Nintendo’s films, building on the huge popularity of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Released in 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie quickly became a huge hit, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. The movie brought the colorful world of the Mushroom Kingdom to life with beloved characters like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and Toad.

Because the movie did so well, Nintendo and Illumination quickly started planning more films based on the franchise.

Instead of just copying ideas from older Super Mario games, the new movie is likely to take inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii. Those games are known for being incredibly creative, featuring levels in space, unique gravity mechanics, and new characters like Rosalina and the Lumas.

Turning that story into a movie allows for a much bigger and broader adventure than just staying within the Mushroom Kingdom.

What Fans Expect From the Galaxy Storyline

Nintendo hasn’t revealed much about the story, but the Super Mario Galaxy games generally involve Mario journeying through different planets to foil Bowser’s plan to take over the universe with a powerful, cosmic force.

The story features Rosalina, a mysterious protector of the universe. She watches over the Comet Observatory and cares for the Lumas – little, star-shaped beings that provide energy for the galaxy.

Rosalina is set to play a major role in the new film where she’ll be played by Brie Larsen.

Switching to a cosmic backdrop would significantly broaden the visual possibilities for the series in films, allowing for settings beyond familiar castles and pipes to include planets, star systems, and environments where gravity works differently.

A Direct Focused Entirely on the Film

Nintendo Direct presentations are usually for announcing new games or big improvements to Nintendo consoles and games. But recently, Nintendo has also been using these presentations to advertise other entertainment projects based on their popular game series.

The next Nintendo Direct focusing on Super Mario Galaxy seems to be less about new game announcements and more of a preview for the upcoming Super Mario movie.

So, Nintendo went ahead and said upfront that we shouldn’t expect any big game reveals during their presentation. Honestly, that kind of bummed a lot of us out – we were all really hoping to get a glimpse of what they’re working on next, and it definitely split the fanbase. Some people appreciated the honesty, but a lot of us were left a little disappointed.

The upcoming stream will probably reveal the most comprehensive preview of the movie yet, including its plot, world, and the people in it, especially with the final trailer being shown.

If you’re excited to learn about Nintendo’s plans for the next Mario movie, Monday’s presentation should offer the best look yet at what they have in store.
