7 Unanswered Questions From Serenity A Firefly Revival Would Need To Finally Answer

As a huge fan of sci-fi, I still think about Firefly all the time. It was this amazing show that blended a Western feel with a really gritty, dangerous future. Sadly, it only lasted one season, but Joss Whedon was able to tie up most of the loose ends with the Serenity movie back in 2005. Now, there’s been talk online about a possible revival, and honestly, I can’t stop wondering what direction they’d take it in!

The movie Serenity was good enough to stand on its own, and many people actually discovered the Firefly universe through it. Over 20 years later, the franchise still has a dedicated fanbase. Here are 7 questions left unanswered by the Serenity movie that a potential Firefly revival should tackle.

7. Does Mal Continue With His Existing Crew?

The Serenity movie shocked fans with the deaths of two beloved characters. Wash, the ship’s pilot played by Alan Tudyk, died in the film’s dramatic final moments. While Shepherd Book wasn’t always present on the Serenity during the Firefly series, he was a significant character, and he was killed by the Alliance in the movie.

The ending of the show made it clear the Serenity spaceship is fully functional. But we still don’t know what happened to the crew. For example, does River (Summer Glau) end up as the new pilot? We saw her briefly fly the ship, and she’s definitely skilled enough to do the job.

Perhaps Simon and Kaylee would prefer to settle down for a bit? They finally found happiness together in the movie, but Serenity really needs Kaylee as its engineer.

Bringing back Firefly would be tough because it would be hard to create new characters that people love as much as the original cast – they were all so memorable and likable.

6. What Happened To River Tam After The Truth About Miranda Was Exposed?

The revelation about Miranda likely stunned everyone in the Verse, as it was the central story of the film. The Alliance tried to stop conflict on the planet by releasing a chemical agent called Pax on its people.

The experiment failed, and most people died. Those who survived were transformed into Reavers. The Alliance wasn’t initially interested in River because of what she knew about Miranda, but it’s unclear if they’re still looking for her, or if they’ve increased their efforts.

Throughout the events of Serenity, River Tam’s mental state was also getting worse. It’s unclear if she ever recovered, or what the lasting effects were of her revealing the Alliance’s biggest secrets.

A new season of Firefly could delve into many unanswered questions about what lies ahead for River Tam.

5. Did People Across The Verse Believe The Recording About Miranda?

Throughout Serenity, Mal (Nathan Fillion) is driven by his desire to reveal the Alliance’s hidden truth about Miranda to everyone in the Verse. However, the film doesn’t show whether his efforts had any effect, or if people actually accepted what they witnessed.

Could the Alliance swiftly erase all traces of ‘the signal’? Would they be able to explain away Pax and Miranda as a complex trick designed to disrupt the peace? This situation offers a lot to think about, and it’s similar to what we’re seeing today with AI-created videos and deepfakes.

Although the Alliance defeated the Independents, unrest still exists throughout the galaxy. Would people who dislike the Alliance be more likely to believe the recording without question, while those loyal to the Alliance might still doubt it?

There are a lot of questions surrounding this, but incorrect information could diminish the bravery shown by the characters in the movie.

4. Did The Events Of Serenity Re-ignite A War Between The Alliance And Independents?

Mal’s strong dislike of the Alliance comes from his past as a Browncoat, fighting against them during the Unification War. While we’ve only gotten brief looks at that war, the events unfolding in Serenity raise the question: could this lead to another conflict?

As a fan, I think whether this storyline works really depends on everyone in the universe actually believing the Miranda message is real. If they decide to go down this path, a new show would have to show us what’s become of the Independent forces – what’s left of them, really.

If a war were to break out, it’s worth considering whether Mal would get involved. After the events of Serenity, would he become a leader or stay out of the spotlight? These smaller details could really impact the direction of any future stories.

3. Did Shepherd Book Take All His Secrets To The Grave?

Shepherd Book’s death was a sad moment in the film, and he remained one of its most enigmatic characters. The movie only hinted at his background and past.

When he shares what he knows about the Alliance with Mal, he comments, “I’m surprised by how much you seem to know about that world.” Mal responds with, “I didn’t always go by Shepherd,” and then quickly changes the subject.

The show reveals Shepherd is a skilled marksman. In one episode, while rescuing Mal from a dangerous ship, Shepherd demonstrated his accuracy by consistently hitting every enemy in the leg without missing a single shot.

It would be a shame if the new show didn’t explore Book’s history. While the creators could choose to keep him mysterious, he was a fan favorite on Firefly and deserves to be remembered.

2. What Will Humanity Do About The Reaver Threat?

Even if people in the ‘Verse are skeptical of the warnings about Reavers, they remain a serious danger. While fans of ‘Firefly’ saw a lot about these nomadic, cannibalistic killers in the movie ‘Serenity’, there’s still a lot we don’t know about them.

We’ve learned that people become Reavers because of a specific chemical. Now, the big questions are: can this condition be reversed, or is a cure possible? And with this new understanding of their origins, would humanity unite against the Reavers?

The Reavers remained largely mysterious throughout the Firefly series, with only a short appearance in one episode. The film Serenity offered a much deeper look into their origins, and this information was shared throughout the galaxy. Would learning that they were once ordinary people have altered anyone’s perception of them?

The backstory of the Reaver could be developed further, since many details about them remain unclear. For instance, despite being known as savage and wild fighters, they are still capable of operating spacecraft.

The movie begins with a classroom scene showing that students educated by the Alliance don’t think the Reavers are actually a threat. A new series could investigate whether those students’ views have evolved since then.

1. Did Mal And Inara Finally Have A Happy Ending?

Mal and Inara have a complex relationship throughout the series. The Serenity movie does a good job of quickly explaining the most important parts of their connection to a wider audience, but they often clash due to their different viewpoints and personalities.

The movie suggests Mal and Inara might get back together. In the final moments, Mal asks if she’s ready to leave their ship and return to a normal life. Inara responds with a simple, “I don’t know.” Mal smiles and says, “Good answer.” While it’s a classic, feel-good ending, the movie leaves us wondering about the details of their relationship.

Those who follow the show are aware that this couple has faced a lot of ups and downs, even though they clearly care for each other. If Inara chose to remain on the ship, what job or position would she take on?

Most fans believe Mal deserves a happy future, and Inara would probably be a big part of it. A new Firefly series would need to answer whether they could actually become a couple, or if their connection is ultimately destined to fail.
