Morgan, Karadec, and the rest of LAPD Major Crimes have more crimes to solve!
ABC has renewed High Potential for a third season, but with a significant update. The series, starring Kaitlin Olson, was a major hit for the network when it premiered in 2024.
Inspired by the French series HPI, High Potential is a key part of ABC’s drama lineup, continuing the network’s tradition of popular crime shows centered around a compelling lead character. While Morgan is the show’s main focus, the series has also successfully developed its supporting characters. Season 2 of High Potential has particularly explored Karadec’s personal life. Fortunately, the show is confirmed to return for the 2026-2027 television season, giving it more time to develop these characters and storylines.
According to Deadline, the show High Potential has been renewed for a third season. This news isn’t a surprise given the show’s performance on ABC. However, there’s also some disappointing news: the original showrunner, Todd Harthan, won’t be returning. He’s leaving to work on the Disney+ live-action series Eragon, with Todd Helbing, as part of his contract with 20th Television.
Since its debut a couple of years ago, Drew Harthan has been the sole showrunner for the successful series High Potential, overseeing the last two seasons. His departure will likely create significant difficulties for the show, and season 3 could see creative shifts, which are always a risk for an established series. It’s currently unknown who will take over, but Harthan’s contributions will definitely be missed.
There are still many episodes left in the second season of High Potential. Since filming is finished, the actors and crew likely knew about the renewal beforehand so they could plan the storyline accordingly. The outcome for this season has already been determined. A major plot point has been the mystery surrounding Roman, Morgan’s former partner. It remains to be seen if his disappearance will be solved this season, or if the show will continue the storyline into a potential third season.
One of the most compelling storylines to follow is the developing romance between Morgan and Karadec. Season 1 offered only hints of a potential relationship, but season 2 is actively building towards it. The fact that the show has been renewed for another season might be slowing things down – the tension of not knowing if they’ll get together is clearly popular with viewers. But on the bright side, that means we’ll get to see more of their story unfold.
High Potential season 2 airs every Tuesday night on ABC.
