Yen Press, a North American publisher, announced last year they would be publishing an English translation of – Prelude – , a light novel series that tells the story leading up to the Frieren manga. The book will be released on March 17, 2026.

You can now pre-order Volume 1 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Prelude from Yen Press! It’s available at major retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, and the Crunchyroll Store.

These light novels, written by Mei Hachimoku and overseen by Kanehito Yamada (the writer of the Frieren manga), offer brand new stories featuring characters from the Frieren world. The first volume contains five original tales focusing on the main characters, as well as side characters like Lawine, Kanne, and Aura.

Frieren’s Official Prequel Story Finally Gets First U.S. Release Date

I’m so excited about this series! It first came out in Japan on April 17, 2024, and it quickly became a hit – selling over 100,000 copies across the country by September! The second volume dropped on December 18, 2025, and fans loved that one too. The sales numbers are incredible – just looking at the week of January 14th to 19th, 2026, it sold around 3,458 copies! It’s amazing to see how popular it’s become.

The manga Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is created by writer Kanehito Yamada and artist Tsukasa Abe. Published in Weekly Shonen Sunday, it’s a high fantasy comedy series about Frieren, an elf who lives forever. The story starts after she and her companions – including a well-known knight named Himmel – defeat the Demon King and go their separate ways. Over twenty-five years later, Frieren and a dwarf warrior named Eisen are the only ones left from that original group.

When Frieren visited her dying friend and former party member, Heiter, she began to understand that she hadn’t truly known what her human companions wanted or felt during their lives. Determined to honor their final requests, Frieren embarks on a new adventure with Fern, a talented young mage, and Stark, a warrior trained by Eisen. Along the way, they face dangerous creatures like mimics and demons, and encounter other mages, all of which helps them learn more about the past and each other.

The anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, created by the renowned Studio Madhouse (known for One-Punch Man and Overlord), first aired in September 2023. It’s currently airing its second season, which began on January 16, 2026. The most recent episode features a story about a strong demon who fights with four swords and a surprising alliance with the skilled mages Genau and Methode. Episode 7 is set to release on March 6.

The first volume of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Prelude will be in stores starting March 17th. You can find the Frieren manga in English published by VIZ Media. The anime, produced by Madhouse, is currently available to stream on popular platforms like Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll.
