Good news for fans of Abbott Elementary! ABC has announced the show will be back for a sixth season, airing during the 2026-2027 television season. This renewal, which is ABC’s first for a scripted series this year, comes while Season 5 is still airing and will bring the total number of episodes past 100, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Abbott Elementary is still a hit, performing well on traditional TV and streaming platforms like Disney+ and Hulu. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s the most-watched comedy this season among adults aged 18-49, averaging 6 million viewers per episode after a week of viewing across all platforms. With consistently strong ratings and positive reviews, Abbott Elementary is a standout show for ABC. As for ABC’s other comedies, Shifting Gears starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, and the revival of Scrubs, there’s no news yet on whether they’ll be renewed.

ABC
Quinta Brunson created and stars in Abbott Elementary, a funny and realistic show filmed like a documentary. It follows the lives of dedicated teachers at a public school in Philadelphia that doesn’t have enough funding. The show premiered on December 7, 2021, and quickly became popular with both critics and viewers. Since its debut, it’s been nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series every year, and in its first season, Sheryl Lee Randolph won Outstanding Supporting Actress and Brunson won Outstanding Writing, both for a Comedy Series.
Since its debut, Abbott Elementary has consistently been quickly renewed for additional seasons. A second season was confirmed just before the first season ended. The announcement for Season 2 came in January 2023, after the season returned from its winter break, but production was paused due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. On February 10, 2024, just three days after Season 3 premiered, ABC renewed the show for Season 4. While Season 4 was still airing in 2025, Season 5 was officially announced. The renewal for Season 6 happened on March 4, 2026, when the show returned after a brief month-long break.
Despite the rise of streaming, 2021 saw a surprising resurgence for traditional network sitcoms. Both Abbott Elementary on ABC and Ghosts on CBS premiered that year, with Ghosts quickly gaining enough popularity to be renewed for seasons five and six in February 2025. This means fans can expect both shows to return for the 2026-2027 TV season. One reason for their success might be their consistent weekly releases with long seasons (over 20 episodes, except during strikes), offering a different experience than streaming services where viewers often have to wait years for new seasons.
It’s good news that both Ghosts and Abbott Elementary have been renewed for at least another season, and with how popular they are, they could very well be on the air for many years to come.
