Within the DC Comics universe, the Justice Society of America was the very first team of superheroes. This team is unique because its members’ stories and powers have been passed down through families for many generations. Though the Justice League is more widely known, the JSA has appeared in both the Arrowverse TV shows and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films. Now, two popular characters who gained fame through those live-action appearances are returning to the Justice Society in the comic books.
In issue #17 of JSA, written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Joey Vazquez, Jay Garrick (the original Flash) and Alan Scott (the original Green Lantern) shared a quiet moment. They reminisced about the Justice Society’s past, particularly the teammates they’d lost, and wondered if it was time for them to step down and let the team come to an end.
Alan’s children, Jade and Obsidian, strongly opposed the idea. While they acknowledged that the team had changed due to recent events and several members leaving, they believed the Justice Society still had a role to play today. They’d even contacted two former members who were excited about returning.
What two JSA mainstays are returning to the team?
The last page showed that Courtney Whitmore, also known as Stargirl, and Al Rothstein, the Atom Smasher, were coming back. Both heroes first joined the Justice Society of America in their famous 1999 series. They had stepped away from the team for a while, but were now prepared to rejoin.
Most people know Stargirl from the TV series starring Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, a lively gymnast who learns her stepfather used to be a superhero’s partner. The show originally aired on the DC Universe streaming service but was later moved to The CW, where it ran for three seasons. It also brought the Justice Society to a new audience of superhero fans.
Atom Smasher is most recognizable as a member of the Justice Society in the DC Extended Universe. He made his debut in the film Black Adam, portrayed by Noah Centineo. Originally, the movie also planned to feature Stargirl, but rights issues related to her existing TV show prevented that. It will be exciting to see how both Atom Smasher and Stargirl contribute to the new Justice Society of America.
