A new series connected to Yellowstone is moving forward, this time following Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), John Dutton’s son. Called Marshals, it’s a procedural drama on CBS and continues the story after the original Yellowstone concluded in December 2024. Season 5 of Yellowstone essentially wrapped up Kayce’s storyline, as well as that of his sister, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly).
In the new show, Marshals, Kayce is taking a different path, but the series hasn’t been well-received by critics – it currently has the lowest rating of any show connected to Yellowstone. A new creative team is behind the camera too; instead of Yellowstone‘s Taylor Sheridan, Spencer Hudnut from SEAL Team is now in charge, and the show’s more straightforward, case-by-case structure has altered the overall feel. However, the biggest difference Marshals makes is in how it concludes Kayce’s storyline, which began on Yellowstone.
Kayce’s Original Ending In Yellowstone Season 5 Explained
Many viewers watching now haven’t seen the original Yellowstone series. It features Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, and other actors as the Dutton family, a powerful and famous family in Montana. The show centers around the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, which the Duttons have owned and fiercely defended for over a hundred years.
After his father was brutally murdered, Kayce decided to give the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch back to the local Native American community. He sold the land to Thomas Rainwater, the chairman of the Broken Rock Tribe (played by Gil Birmingham), and rejoined the Marshals. This act allowed Kayce to escape the cycle of pointless violence that had plagued his family for generations while they owned Montana’s biggest ranch.
Kayce resigned as Livestock Commissioner, a position with a long history, which had also been a way to safeguard the ranch. Though Kayce excels at his law enforcement duties, proving his capabilities, John Dutton ultimately chooses to step down from his position. This final decision, like many in the show’s conclusion, reflects a desire for a life free from conflict and violence.
Given how Yellowstone ended with Tate and Monica starting a new life and small ranch at East Camp, many expected the next story to continue that peaceful path. However, the news that Walker’s character is now part of an elite group of US Marshals suggests Kayce hasn’t fully left behind his violent past.
How Marshals Rewrites Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone Conclusion
Kayce had stepped away from the dangerous life he knew, selling the Dutton Ranch and giving up his position as Livestock Commissioner to keep his family safe. However, the show is now changing that ending. Instead of finding peace, Kayce is once again facing danger, and the story is reversing his earlier desire for a quiet life.
Given Kayce’s background as a Navy SEAL, law enforcement officer, and member of the Dutton family, his job as a US Marshal makes sense. However, it doesn’t fully explain his character development in Yellowstone, particularly how hesitant he became to take risks once he had a family. While his priorities changed, he still grapples with his past.
Kayce feels he must protect Tate, especially now that the boy is grieving the loss of his mother and grandfather and needs his father’s presence. However, instead of staying safe at the East Camp ranch, Kayce has returned to a dangerous life of conflict in Montana, a decision that seems to be falling apart.
Despite its flaws, Marshals effectively explains Kayce’s choices. Familiar faces from Yellowstone continue to be important in how Dutton makes decisions. Just as they supported Kayce in Yellowstone, Thomas and Mo now help him understand his place within his family’s troubled past.
Mo explains to Kayce that he’s naturally protective and can channel his family’s aggressive tendencies into positive action. However, during a raid with the marshals, Kayce displays the Duttons’ ruthless side, creating tension with his team leader when he forcefully inserts his rifle into an open wound of a suspect.
As a huge fan, I think Monica’s situation is really driving Kayce, too. He always felt a pull to protect her people, and this seems like a chance to finally do that, which fits with his journey on Yellowstone. Honestly, it’s a bit of a surprise where the story is going with Kayce after Yellowstone ends, it’s not what anyone predicted! But it doesn’t feel completely out of character for him, just a different direction. It’s definitely a shift in pace, though!
