Hugh Jackman’s Cyberpunk Action Thriller ‘Chappie’ Now Streaming Free

Besides his famous role as Wolverine in the X-Men films, Hugh Jackman also appeared in a lesser-known, free-to-stream cyberpunk thriller where he played the villain. It turns out Jackman is a big fan of science fiction – almost as much as he loves musical theater! Throughout his career, he’s been in at least ten sci-fi projects, which is comparable to the number of times he’s performed on stage and in films, showcasing his singing talents.

Critics weren’t impressed with the cyberpunk film, and audiences weren’t much happier. With a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 56% audience score, the movie didn’t receive positive reviews. While it’s not the worst film Hugh Jackman has been in, it’s far from his best – perhaps adding a musical element or two could have improved its reception.

Released in theaters on March 6, 2015, Chappie was the third film from director Neill Blomkamp, following his successful debut District 9 and the somewhat controversial Elysium. While Elysium made a modest profit, Chappie didn’t perform well at the box office, only just covering its production budget.

What Went Wrong With ‘Chappie’?

The movie Chappie has an interesting premise: a police robot gets a new lease on life when criminals reprogram him and try to raise him as one of their own. As Chappie develops his own thoughts and feelings, he finds himself in danger from the villainous Vincent Moore (played by Jackman), who wants to eliminate him. Based on the trailer, it seems like a promising film, doesn’t it?

This movie had the potential to be a thought-provoking exploration of what it means to be human, but it ultimately fell apart. It couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a dramatic, heartfelt story or a silly crime comedy, and that made it difficult for viewers to connect with it.

Okay, let’s talk about the performances. Hugh Jackman’s villain just didn’t land for me. He felt flat, honestly, like a caricature rather than a complex character. There was no nuance there. And then there’s Sigourney Weaver. Honestly, it was a real disappointment to see such a phenomenal actress relegated to such a small role. She’s a legend, and the movie barely gave her anything to do. It felt like a huge waste of her talent.

‘Chappie’ Was Supposed To Be a Trilogy

Sony Pictures Releasing

As a big fan of Neil Blomkamp’s work, I always got the sense he was building a whole world with films like District 9 and Elysium. He actually wrote Chappie intending it to be the first part of a trilogy – he told IGN back in 2015 he’d make more if the money allowed. Unfortunately, Chappie didn’t do well with audiences or critics, and that pretty much put an end to any plans he had for continuing the story.

If you’re curious to see Hugh Jackman in the sci-fi film Chappie, it’s currently available to watch for free on Tubi, though the movie itself could have been stronger.
