Disney’s princess movies are central to its success, and many are cherished by audiences. But one stands out as a truly modern classic that people still discuss today:
With its popularity on Disney+ and the addition of a new ride and restaurant at Disney parks, it’s clear why this story remains so beloved. It also proves that there’s still a strong place for traditional 2D animation within Disney, and it shows how to do it right – simply by being a fantastic movie.
The Princess and the Frog Ushered in Disney’s CG Era
The traditional animation style used by the company spanned decades and ultimately became its defining characteristic. But seeing The Princess and the Frog as the last film made in this style feels less like a proper farewell and more like a recognition that the technique was discontinued while still at its best. The primary reason production stopped was simply that traditional animation was a very time-consuming and expensive process, whereas computer-generated animation proved to be more cost-effective and efficient.
While both are impressive, traditional 2D animation clearly shows the dedication and care put into each individual frame. CG animation relies on efficient techniques, so achieving the desired look feels different. 2D animation constantly evolves, and you can really see that progress when you compare classic films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to more recent ones like The Princess and the Frog.
When Disney started using computer-generated imagery, the quality of their films stayed high, but they were able to add a lot more intricate detail. Films like Big Hero 6 have a modern, futuristic look, while Tangled feels like a classic, colorful fairy tale. These movies are just as imaginative and groundbreaking and should be celebrated as part of Disney’s legacy. However, switching away from traditional animation shouldn’t be the answer, and the popularity of The Princess and the Frog demonstrates that.
CG and 2D Animation Should be Shared as Disney Releases New Movies
Films like Encanto demonstrate the incredible possibilities of computer-generated animation. Similarly, classic Pixar movies prove that strong storytelling and artistic quality are important, regardless of how a film is made. Because of this, there’s no reason to stop using animation altogether, and traditional 2D animation shouldn’t have been abandoned in the first place.
Although the movie Wish wasn’t a huge success in theaters, its unique combination of computer-generated and traditional 2D animation is impressive. We shouldn’t judge the value of 2D animation based on one film’s performance. Disney used to have 2D animation studios even at its Florida parks, and it’s time to bring them back in some form. Just as classic animation styles have remained popular, 2D animation and new stories created with it deserve to exist alongside computer animation.
The Princess and the Frog is a wonderful movie that truly shines, especially when you appreciate its unique and beautiful art style. Instead of cutting back on films like this to save money, Disney should prioritize releasing their most special and meaningful stories. They can still use computer animation, and a wider range of stories would reinforce why Disney is the leader in animated storytelling – a position they’ve consistently held, unlike any other studio.
