The upcoming M3GAN spinoff movie, Soulm8te, which has faced several delays, has received its first R-rating. The Motion Picture Association gave the film the rating because of intense violence, gore, sexual content, nudity, and strong language.
Fans will be happy to hear that both M3GAN and its sequel, M3GAN 2.0, have been rated PG-13.
While a PG-13 rating doesn’t guarantee a horror movie will be bad, it often means the filmmakers avoided anything too intense. This can sometimes lead to forgettable films, as they had to tone down the scares and violence to reach a wider, more family-friendly audience.
Just a year after the release of the movie M3GAN in 2024, details emerged about its sequel, Soulm8te. The story centers on a man who buys an AI android to help him deal with the grief of losing his wife. However, his efforts to make the android truly lifelike accidentally transform a gentle companion into a dangerous one.
Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit, Oliver Cooper, Steve Chusak, Emma Ramos, and Ossian Perret star in the film Soulm8te. Hannah Brady, Jon Tarcy, Nicholas Lane, Cameron Anthony, Harleen Sahota, Charlie Kranz, and Sydney Blackburn also appear. Kate Dolan directed the movie, working from a script she co-wrote with Rafael Jordan. Filming finished in 2024.
Why Audiences Haven’t Seen Soulm8te Yet
The film faced setbacks after losing its initial distributor, Universal, following an earlier delay. At the time, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster were actively seeking a new distributor to release it.
Even though there haven’t been any recent updates about a distributor or release date for Soulm8te, fans still have reason to be optimistic. Considering the overall interest in the film, the dedication of the people making it, and the talent involved, Soulm8te is still expected to be released in theaters before the end of the year.
As a total film buff, I’ve been following this project closely, and the writer-director, Kate Dolan, has said something that really resonated with me. She sees the movie as a deep dive into how we connect with each other – or don’t – and how loneliness affects us all. She believes that even with all the technology we have today, some fundamental human experiences just stay with us, and she’s excited to really explore those themes. It sounds incredibly moving, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she’s created.
