The popular actor is returning to his action roots with a brand new film. The movie will also feature some new faces, and excitingly, includes a cast member from the Fallen series, bringing a welcome reunion for fans.
Danny Huston, known for his role in Yellowstone, is one of four actors joining the cast of Empire City, an action-thriller filmed in Australia. The movie, which is similar in style to Die Hard, has just finished filming. Huston previously worked with Gerard Butler in Angel Has Fallen, the third film in the Fallen series. Also joining the cast are Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), Paul Ben-Victor (The Wire), and Evan Handler (Sex and the City).
Empire City Has Assembled a Strong Cast
Michael Matthews directs Empire City, a film written by Brian Tucker and S. Craig Zahler. Luke Butler is producing the movie with Marc Butan, Alan Siegel, and Paul Currie. The cast includes Hayley Atwell (known from the Mission: Impossible films), Omari Hardwick (Army of the Dead), Mel Jarnson, Tre Hale (Platonic), Michael Beach (Mayor of Kingstown), Dominic Bogart (American Primeval), Stephen Murphy (The Odyssey), Jack DiFalco (Daredevil), and Kaiwi Lyman (Den of Thieves).
I just saw Empire City, and it’s a pretty straightforward action thriller. The film stars Butler as Rhett, a Navy SEAL-turned-firefighter, and Atwell as his wife, Dani, who’s an NYPD officer. The story kicks off when a hostage situation erupts in a New York skyscraper, the Clybourn Building, and Rhett and his team have to fight their way up to rescue everyone. Hardwick plays the villain, Hawkins, and honestly, the plot feels like we’ve seen it before – lots of action, but not a lot of surprises. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, explosive movie, this one delivers, but don’t expect anything groundbreaking.
We now know who the new actors will be playing. Imperioli will portray Mayor Holloway, the city’s leader during the hostage situation, who is struggling to stay in control as chaos erupts. Huston is Charles Clybourn, the wealthy heir to a real estate empire with a hidden, dark secret connected to the night’s events. Ben-Victor will play Commissioner Lance Davies, a high-ranking NYPD official who faces difficult choices and tests of loyalty as the crisis worsens. Finally, Handler will be Chief Bagley, the intelligence chief whose sharp analytical skills become vital to uncovering the conspiracy behind the unfolding events.
Gerard Butler’s Reign on the Big Screen Continues
Gerard Butler starred in Butler, a disaster movie that continues the story from 2020’s Greenland. Last year, he also appeared in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, the sequel to the 2018 film, which fans had been waiting seven years to see. Additionally, Butler returned to voice the character Stoick the Vast in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, a role he originally played in the animated version.
Empire City does not yet have a set release date.
