Be warned – spoilers for Outlander Season 8 are ahead! Unfortunately, those hoping to see Black Jack Randall return will likely be disappointed, as the popular character from Season 3 won’t be appearing in the show’s eighth and final season.
This historical romance is based on Diana Gabaldon’s 1991 novel and tells the story of Claire Beauchamp, a World War II nurse who unexpectedly finds herself in 1743 Scotland. There, she encounters Jamie Fraser, and together they embark on a journey filled with love, heartbreak, and the struggle between different eras.
Despite fan speculation, the show’s producers have confirmed that Jonathan Randall, better known as Black Jack, will not be returning from the dead in the final season of Outlander. Season 8 will center around the events of the American Revolution at Fraser’s Ridge. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, producers Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis explained that while they wished they had more opportunities to feature Black Jack – who was definitively killed in season 2 at the Battle of Culloden, as confirmed by both the actor and the author, Diana Gabaldon – he is just one of many characters they regret not exploring further.
There was a lot of material from the books we wished we could have included, but we were limited by time. I’m glad we were able to expand Murtagh’s role, even though that wasn’t in the original story. We hoped to show more of Black Jack, but it didn’t quite work out. It’s hard to say what we missed most – there was just so much! Ultimately, we had to focus on creating a strong, consistent story within the constraints of the episode count. Overall, I’m very pleased with how the story turned out and the work the writers did.
Although plans for a Black Jack series didn’t move forward, there’s clearly continued interest in the world of Outlander. This is proven by the upcoming 2025 spin-off, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and the wealth of existing source material. Beyond the main Outlander novels, the franchise includes short stories focusing on different characters, a graphic novel, and a book series following Lord John Grey. While details are still under wraps, the producers have discussed developing even more spin-off series.
We’re exploring options for additional spin-offs and figuring out the best direction for the future of the show. I can’t share any details right now, but there could be announcements coming soon.
Outlander returns to Starz on Friday, March 6.
