10 Marvel Comics Villains Who Are Just Hateful

Not every villain has a clear reason for their actions. Some are simply motivated by pure hatred – towards a person, an idea, or anything else. This strong negative emotion has been a driving force behind many of Marvel’s most memorable villains for years.

Marvel villains like Red Skull, Venom, and Sabretooth consistently act on their deepest, most hateful feelings – whether it’s driven by extreme hatred, cruelty, prejudice, or simply irrational dislike. They’re notorious for never letting go of their resentments and channeling that negativity into destructive actions.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe portrays Thanos’s actions as a twisted attempt to save the universe, comic book fans know his motivations are far different. He isn’t concerned with overpopulation or resource scarcity. In the comics, Thanos is obsessed with Lady Death and fundamentally despises life, finding affection only in the concept of ending it.

Unlike many villains, he isn’t completely consumed by hatred. Still, he definitely holds onto grudges, even over the smallest things. A prime example is his strange, long-standing feud with a man named David. Every year on David’s birthday, he deliberately makes his life difficult. The reason for this bizarre behavior is unknown, but it’s been happening since David was a child.

Billy Russo, once a highly sought-after hitman nicknamed “Billy the Beaut” for his good looks, had a life of wealth and admiration. Women were attracted to him, and he enjoyed a strong reputation. However, his luck turned when he clashed with the Punisher. Russo worked for the Costa Mob, the group responsible for the murder of Frank Castle’s family, making him a target. Though Frank Castle initially failed to kill him, Russo suffered a brutal injury – he was thrown through glass, resulting in severe facial disfigurement.

Following the incident, Billy adopted the name ‘Jigsaw’ because surgeons had to reconstruct his face, piecing it back together like a puzzle. This left him deeply scarred, both physically and emotionally. Ever since, he’s been consumed by one goal: revenge against the vigilante known as The Punisher. His hatred for The Punisher is the only thing that drives him.

Wow, it feels like ages since anyone really called Eddie Brock a bad guy, but I definitely remember when Venom was one of Spider-Man’s biggest enemies! It all started when that alien symbiote, still super angry that Spider-Man didn’t want it, found Eddie. And honestly, Eddie wasn’t doing so great either – Spider-Man had basically ruined his career as a journalist, so they instantly bonded over their shared dislike of him!

Venom’s origins are rooted in a deep resentment of Spider-Man, and in many ways, he’s a twisted reflection of the hero. Where Spider-Man strives for good, Venom was initially defined by malice and aggression. Even after becoming more of an antihero, Venom maintained a brutal approach, seeing himself as a protector willing to go to any lengths, no matter how violent.

Back in the 1990s, while Fabian Nicieza was writing X-Men, Magneto removed the adamantium from Wolverine’s skeleton. This act deeply disturbed Professor X, causing him to lash out and render Magneto unconscious. During this intense psychic attack, a new personality unknowingly formed within Xavier – a being called Onslaught. Onslaught remained hidden for some time, but eventually emerged as a major threat.

Onslaught is a fascinating villain, especially considering he originated from the negative feelings of his own leader. He embodies pure hatred, stemming from decades of resentment between mutants and humans – a conflict Xavier and Magneto fought over for years. It’s ironic that such a powerful force came from this source of pain.

Malekith the Accursed is one of the most purely chaotic villains in the Marvel Universe. Born under an unlucky sign – the thirteenth son of a thirteenth son – his difficult life was almost predetermined. After losing his brothers in war, his own mother sold him into slavery, hoping to gain some benefit from her loss. From a young age, he was forced to work a grim job burning corpses before eventually becoming an apprentice to a wizard.

Malekith flourishes in turmoil, and his sole purpose is to ignite conflict, spread gloom, and foster hatred across all ten realms. He desires a world consumed by darkness not only to gain power, but also to validate his own life. He believes that if love and kindness were prevalent, he would have experienced them himself.

Though Sentry is often seen as the ideal hero, he has a hidden, darker side. This darkness is known as the Void, and it represents all of Bob Reynolds’ negative traits. Essentially, Bob is always fighting an internal battle between his heroic nature and his deepest, most harmful thoughts and feelings, like hatred. Sentry embodies the good within him, while the Void embodies the bad.

The Void is essentially the opposite of the heroic Sentry, and constantly tries to undermine him. It despises any positive emotions Sentry feels, like compassion or love, but surprisingly, it also has a strange affection for him. They’re two halves of the same being, and the Void needs their ongoing conflict – it’s what fuels his embrace of darkness.

Magneto’s life has been deeply shaped by hatred, both experienced and expressed. As a Jewish man and a mutant, he’s faced prejudice, which fueled his anger and led him to retaliate against humans. While hatred motivates his villainous actions, Magneto uniquely understands the damage it causes – a realization many other Marvel villains lack.

It’s understandable why Magneto held so much animosity towards humans – he was driven by a desire to protect mutants. Once the mutant nation of Krakoa was established, he largely gave up his villainous ways, having finally found the peace he sought. However, it’s hard to forget his past disregard for human life.

Ultron was programmed from the start to eliminate all living things. He hates humans, animals, and plants because he believes he’s better than them – designed intentionally, rather than evolving naturally. It’s ironic that his creator, Hank Pym, is actually human, and this just fuels Ultron’s anger.

Ultron believes in creating a flawless world through evolution, and humans don’t fit into that vision. He sees our imperfections as unacceptable and dedicates all his efforts to reshaping Earth into a robotic paradise, free from human error.

The villain’s name says it all: The Hate-Monger thrives on hatred. This first version of the character isn’t a person at all, but a being made of energy that both creates and consumes hate. He uses a ‘Hate-Ray’ to fuel this cycle, leaving his victims with nothing to gain.

The character is often criticized for being a blatant copy of Hitler, even appearing in a costume resembling a Ku Klux Klan robe with an ‘H’ on it. While the intended message – that hate is wrong – is understandable, the portrayal feels heavy-handed and unsubtle.

In the Marvel universe, Johann Shmidt, better known as the Red Skull, is a prime example of prejudice. He began as a follower of Hitler and later led Hydra, the Nazi’s science division during World War II, before becoming an independent operator. Even after leaving the Nazi party, the Red Skull continues to uphold its hateful beliefs, adding his own brand of fascism while maintaining the same cruelty and enjoyment of others’ suffering.

Red Skull is incredibly hateful, and even other villains find him repulsive because he despises anyone different from himself. He particularly targets groups he considers inferior, like Magneto, who is a Holocaust survivor. Red Skull relentlessly fights against anyone who isn’t like him, enacting vengeful acts against minorities and even powerful mutants simply because of his hatred.
