Seann William Scott is famous for comedies like the American Pie and Goon movies, but he’s also appeared in horror films, including the recent Dolly. However, that unsettling movie might mean he’s no longer seen as a leading man in scary films.
I vividly remember spending the entire day crawling through the woods with this thing on, and it was really unpleasant. I immediately thought, ‘I never want to do that again!’ I felt so silly, and I have no idea how actors manage an entire movie wearing prosthetics. However, I knew it would all be worth it. We’d only been filming for a week, but everything I saw made me think this movie was going to be amazing, which kept me going. Plus, it wasn’t terrible – just a bit uncomfortable.
For a scene in the thriller, Scott’s character, Chase, has a frightening encounter with the story’s doll-like villain, who violently removes the bottom half of his jaw. Though Chase lives through this brutal attack, the actor had to continue filming for the rest of the day wearing a prosthetic jaw attached to his face.
O’Connell asked Scott if filming Dolly had bothered him, considering his dedication to physically transforming for roles. Scott responded strongly, and likened the discomfort of wearing the film’s prosthetics to what his The Rundown co-star, Dwayne Johnson, likely experienced while filming a highly praised sports movie.
“Absolutely not. I would never agree to that,” the actor stated. He compared it to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s role in his recent film, The Smashing Machine, saying, “I saw that movie and thought, ‘Wow, he’s tough!’ But I couldn’t do something like that myself.” In fact, Johnson did undergo extensive makeup to accurately portray the late UFC fighter Mark Kerr in the A24 drama directed and written by Benny Safdie. Thankfully, he didn’t have to wear a prosthetic lower jaw all day.
Scott hadn’t taken on a role demanding such physical and emotional discomfort before, not even in early films like his 2000 debut, Final Destination. He later starred in the 2018 thriller Bloodline, playing a serial killer who preyed on those who abused children, and more recently, he played the villain in the 2023 film The Wrath of Becky.
Seann William Scott Powered Through His Uncomfortable Prosthetic, Knowing It Would Look “Awesome”
Despite finding the special effects makeup unpleasant to wear, Seann William Scott remained dedicated to his role, enduring the discomfort to help make the movie Dolly as terrifying as possible. He described the prosthetic as heavy and irritating, explaining that it required constant adjustments throughout the final day of filming. However, he believed the effort would be worthwhile, stating he had a good feeling about the movie from the beginning. His instincts proved correct, as Dolly has received a 70% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2025 and was subsequently picked up for distribution by the Independent Film Company and Shudder.
Dolly is a film, shot on 16mm in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and based on Rod Blackhurst’s 2022 short film, Babygirl. It stars Fabianne Therese as Macy, a young woman kidnapped by a frightening attacker – a professional wrestler known as Max the Impaler – who is disguised as a porcelain doll and wants to raise her as his child.
The movie Dolly will be released in theaters on Friday, March 6, 2026, and will also be available to stream on Shudder later in the year.
