Leslye Headland, the creator of the Disney+ series The Acolyte, recently discussed her ideas for a potential second season in an interview with The George Lucas Talk Show, as reported by The HoloFiles. Although the show was canceled almost two years ago, Headland’s comments have reignited discussions about the future of Star Wars and, specifically, how Yoda was portrayed in the series.

At the end of the show, Vernestra Rwoh went to see the Jedi Master after making the decision to blame Sol for Qimir’s actions. When asked if Yoda would have helped cover it up, the creator confidently said, “Absolutely.” She preemptively asked viewers not to criticize the choice, pointing out that Yoda had engaged in similar behavior in the Clone Wars series.
The suggestion that Yoda, who is often seen as the heart of goodness in Star Wars, could have been involved in wrongdoing is a surprising new direction for his story.
A Question of Canon and Character
Headland supported her claims by referencing existing Star Wars storylines. In The Clone Wars series, Yoda and the Jedi Council deliberately hid certain facts about corruption. Although this is similar to what happens in her story—with a character concealing information—some fans point out that the situation in The Clone Wars was different.

Yoda and the Jedi Council faced a tough choice during wartime: expose corruption and risk collapsing the Republic’s military, or stay silent for strategic reasons. But the events in The Acolyte happen during a time of peace, a detail the show’s creator appears to have overlooked. This changes things because Yoda’s potential cover-up involves murders committed by someone using the Dark Side, which presents a completely different set of moral questions.
The Mentor Archetype at Stake
Yoda is often seen as the ultimate symbol of wisdom, self-control, and spiritual understanding. Within the stories George Lucas created, he’s the classic mentor figure, helping heroes like Luke Skywalker choose the good path. To many fans, Yoda’s words shaped how they understood the Force and what it meant to be a hero. That’s why the idea of him protecting a murderer – especially one who embraces the dark side – feels so surprising and out of character.

Some fans might like that Headland is adding more moral nuance to the Star Wars galaxy. Others believe Star Wars has always been about simple choices between good and evil, light and dark. While stories can certainly explore complicated situations, the question is whether Star Wars is a series that should do that.
The Risks of Reimagining Legacy Characters
With recent Star Wars projects proving controversial, the franchise is trying to win back fans. One risky approach is to portray classic characters like Yoda as flawed and imperfect. While creators might want to make the stories more realistic and interesting, changing these well-loved characters could upset viewers who appreciated the original series’ clear sense of right and wrong.
Interestingly, these story ideas never actually made it into the show. Now that The Acolyte has been canceled, Headland’s plans are just fan theories and aren’t considered official Star Wars history. As a result, Yoda’s reputation and story within the official timeline remain unchanged.

However, the discussion highlights a more significant point. Yoda isn’t just a character; he embodies the central ideas behind Star Wars. Changing his role doesn’t just affect one story—it changes how we understand the whole series. Whether this change will ultimately benefit the franchise or move it away from its original spirit is a question that will shape its future.
