Young Sherlock Season 2: Renewal Status, Potential Storylines, & Cast Returns

Warning: spoilers for Young Sherlock season 1.

Prime Video’s “Young Sherlock” explores the early adventures of the famous detective, and leaves viewers wanting more with a great setup for a potential second season. Sherlock Holmes remains a popular figure, and because the rights to his character are widely available, many creators have put their own spin on the stories. One example is Andrew Lane’s book series, also called “Young Sherlock,” which has now been adapted into a TV show on Prime Video.

The series Young Sherlock takes place during the Victorian era, a perfect backdrop for stories inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It follows 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) as he attends Oxford University. While there, he forms a quick friendship with another gifted student, James Moriarty (Dónal Finn), and also meets the recently arrived Chinese Princess, Shou’an (Zine Tseng).

After being wrongly accused of murdering an Oxford professor, Sherlock and James work to prove his innocence. But the investigation quickly reveals a much larger conspiracy and hidden family secrets. The first season of Young Sherlock has been well-received and sets the stage for another season.

Young Sherlock Season 2 Hasn’t Been Confirmed

It’s unusual for a TV show to get a renewal before anyone’s even seen it, and that’s what’s happening with Young Sherlock. However, the show received great reviews before its release – it currently has an 86% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes – so the lack of a pre-premiere renewal isn’t a cause for concern.

With positive reviews already coming in, Young Sherlock is likely to become even more popular once all episodes are available for streaming, and this popularity will be crucial for getting a second season. While it’s difficult to predict exactly when a renewal announcement will be made, a second season of Young Sherlock could be confirmed a few weeks after the show’s release, assuming it performs well.

Predicting a release date is difficult since the show hasn’t been renewed yet. If Young Sherlock gets renewed before summer 2026, and filming starts in late 2026, we might see season 2 arrive in late 2027 or early 2028, based on how the first season was made.

What Young Sherlock Season 2’s Story Could Be About

A major highlight of Young Sherlock is when Sherlock and James embark on a larger adventure that extends beyond Oxford. The series consistently expands on the initial mystery, which starts with stolen documents and a professor’s death, and soon evolves into a dangerous conspiracy involving hidden family secrets.

While the central mystery of Young Sherlock season one is resolved, the finale hints at further family secrets yet to be revealed. More significantly, the season also explores the complex relationship between Sherlock and James, showcasing both their friendship and the growing tensions between them.

In Young Sherlock, the series establishes James as a villain by showing his intense interest in creating a deadly chemical weapon, his disturbing enjoyment of taking a life, and his theft of the weapon’s formula. Season 2 will likely explore James’ descent into villainy further, as well as the early stages of his rivalry with Sherlock, hinting at their future, famous conflict.

Young Sherlock Season 2 Cast Details

Although the show Young Sherlock hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season, we know some actors are likely to return. Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Dónal Finn are expected to reprise their roles as Sherlock and James, continuing their characters’ storylines. Max Irons as Mycroft Holmes and Natascha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes are also anticipated to be back.

We could also see Beatrice Holmes (Holly Cattle) return, as the first season ended with her reconnecting with her family and beginning a secret romance with James. There’s also a possibility Joseph Fiennes might reprise his role as Silas Holmes, perhaps revealing he didn’t actually die when he fell off the cliff.

Young Sherlock is a promising series that lays a good foundation for a second season. If viewers and critics respond positively, a renewal is likely to happen soon.
