Shanks shows off some serious Haki – enough to make Whitebeard take notice – and then he starts talking about his former crewmate, Blackbeard. He points to the three scars on his eye and reveals Blackbeard is the one who caused them! But here’s the really interesting part: Shanks also lets slip that he was watching their fight closely, and he saw something truly special in Blackbeard, even then.
Shanks was well-known for his intense rivalry with Dracule Mihawk, considered the world’s greatest swordsman – they were evenly matched opponents. Surprisingly, Blackbeard managed to wound Shanks with a deep, unhealing cut, likely using his signature weapon: a three-bladed claw called teko-kagi. The number three seems to be a recurring theme with Blackbeard, and Shanks’ scars visibly demonstrate this connection.
Looking at the story’s events and when things happened, it’s become clear that Blackbeard was already a skilled fighter before he obtained the powers of the Dark-Dark Fruit. He actually challenged Shanks without those powers, proving his abilities came long before he took the fruit from Commander Thatch. Fans have come up with many theories, such as the idea that he had another Devil Fruit before the Dark-Dark Fruit and even the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. Shanks Warned Whitebeard Against Sending Ace After Blackbeard
Okay, so when Shanks showed up with Whitebeard’s crew back in chapter 434, it wasn’t a friendly visit – he was there to warn them! He basically told them Blackbeard was using Whitebeard’s reputation as cover, and that they needed to watch out. Shanks was super insistent that Blackbeard was a serious threat, way too dangerous and unpredictable, especially now that he’d gotten the Dark-Dark Fruit and was actually doing things. He really wanted to make sure everyone understood Blackbeard was a force to be reckoned with!
Shanks had a feeling that Ace’s encounter with Blackbeard would set off a chain of events, ultimately leading to a chaotic and dangerous time. He urgently pleaded with Whitebeard to recall Ace, believing he wasn’t prepared to fight someone as unpredictable and powerful as Blackbeard.
Whitebeard ignored Shanks’ advice and continued his pursuit of Blackbeard. This led to a fierce battle between them, with both pirates displaying incredible strength. The chapter ends with Ace finally reaching Blackbeard’s crew, suggesting Shanks knew his warning wouldn’t change Whitebeard’s mind.
Everyone knows what happened after that. Blackbeard captured Ace and turned him over to the World Government, which led to the massive battle at Marineford and the fall of Whitebeard’s empire – exactly as Shanks had foreseen. Shanks believes Blackbeard has been deliberately pursuing ultimate power, and things have been falling into place for him so far. Although Blackbeard is one of the Four Emperors, we haven’t seen much of what he’s accomplished – like defeating the Heart Pirates, taking over Hachinosu Island, and finishing off the remaining members of the Whitebeard Pirates. This might be intentional, allowing Blackbeard to develop his hidden strengths subtly, in a way that parallels Luffy’s more visible progress.
As a long-time One Piece fan, it’s becoming incredibly clear that Oda’s been building up Blackbeard to be a truly terrifying force for a long time now! The latest reveal about him being a descendant of Davy D. Jones, supposedly the King of the World, is just mind-blowing. Meanwhile, Luffy’s connection to Joy Boy and inheriting his will and powers… it all points to an epic showdown between these two. They’re practically destined to clash, and it’s going to be huge!
Those hoping for a detailed showdown between Shanks and Blackbeard might be let down. The story seems to be building towards a final battle between Luffy and Blackbeard instead.
