With the new series The Dutton Ranch on the way, a producer has revealed that a popular tradition from Yellowstone will carry over to the spin-off focusing on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
As a big fan of the Yellowstone universe, I was a little sad to see the original series wrap up in 2024. But honestly, it feels like just the beginning! We already got amazing prequels with 1883 and 1923, and now there’s a new spinoff, Marshals, over on CBS. Plus, I’m really excited to hear they’re currently filming the first season of The Dutton Ranch down in Texas – it’s great to know the story is continuing!
As a huge fan of the Yellowstone universe, I was really interested to hear from producer David Glasser. He recently shared that The Dutton Ranch will definitely keep the spirit of the original series alive – meaning we can expect plenty of shocking deaths and incredibly intense moments. He told Entertainment Tonight at the Marshals premiere that these shows are always full of action and, well, people getting hurt! Apparently, just when you think the writers can’t raise the stakes any higher, they manage to surprise you.
Glasser explained that having the Dutton Ranch as a setting allows the show’s creators to delve more into the personal lives of Beth and Rip, and to show how these characters develop and change over time.
We’re actively working on it! I literally just finished filming on location in Texas and flew here today, so it’s still in the early stages. But it’s going to be really exciting – we’re going to delve deeper into the characters and also show them developing and changing. That’s what’s great – people love following these characters’ journeys, but they also want to see them evolve. And of course, it’s going to be a lot of fun. These shows always involve intense action – lots of conflict, dramatic events, and we’re always finding ways to raise the stakes even higher.
Taylor Sheridan is known for directing and writing acclaimed films like Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. He then brought his storytelling to television, creating the hit Western series Yellowstone. He served as the show’s writer, producer, and director throughout its five seasons, which ran from 2018 to 2024 and quickly became a cultural sensation.
Sheridan continued building the world of Yellowstone with shows like 1883 and 1923. He also created other series, including Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and The Road.
The world of Yellowstone is growing with the new series Marshals, featuring Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. Familiar faces Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham also return as Tate Dutton, Mo, and Thomas Rainwater, respectively. This CBS drama follows Kayce as he begins a new chapter working with the U.S. Marshals.
The new show Marshals has received mixed reviews, with a 45% score from critics and a 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is quite different from the first two Yellowstone spinoffs, which have averaged much higher scores – 89% from critics and 94% from audiences.
Even though the initial response to Marshals wasn’t great, the series is continuing with production. Filming is currently happening on The Dutton Ranch, and it will bring back Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Finn Little from Yellowstone as their characters Beth, Rip, and Carter. The cast also includes Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Jai Courtney, Natalie Alyn Lind, Marc Menchaca, Juan Pablo Raba, and J.R. Villarreal. Chad Feehan is the showrunner.
According to recent hints from creator Taylor Sheridan, many characters are at risk of dying in the Yellowstone universe. The show has already seen several main characters killed off – including Lee Dutton, Fred Myers, Samantha Long, Sarah Nguyen, Dirk Hurdstram, Wade Morrow, Emmett Walsh, Sarah Atwood, and John Dutton III – and viewers should anticipate even more deaths in The Dutton Ranch.
While a specific release date hasn’t been revealed, The Dutton Ranch is currently slated to premiere on Paramount+ around 2026.
