Disney’s Zootopia 2 Finally Sets Disney+ Release Date

The hugely popular world of Disney’s Zootopia is continuing on streaming! The new sequel picks up the story from the original 2016 film and has become a massive success.

The animated sequel Zootopia 2 will be available to stream on Disney+ starting March 11th. Disney confirmed the news following the film’s successful theatrical release on November 26th, which broke box office records, and a strong performance when it became available for digital purchase on January 27th.

The new movie brings back Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, as they continue their work as new police officers.

The new story follows Judy and Nick as they investigate a big mystery when Gary De’Snake (voiced by Ke Huy Quan, an Academy Award winner) causes chaos in Zootopia. They’ll have to go undercover in unfamiliar areas of the city, and their friendship will be pushed to its limits as they try to solve the case.

Zootopia 2 Continued an Exciting Disney Sequel Trend

The 2016 animated film Zootopia was a huge success, earning over $1 billion worldwide. Critics loved it, giving it a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences also enjoyed it, with a 92% approval score. The film was even recognized with an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Even before the Oscars ceremony, Zootopia 2 earned a nomination and has been highly praised, receiving a 91% approval rating from critics and a 96% rating from audiences. The sequel proved to be very successful for Disney, earning $1.85 billion worldwide – more than the first Zootopia film and becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood movie of 2025. It recently topped A Minecraft Movie to become the year’s biggest hit.

Disney often sees its sequels perform better than the original movies, and Zootopia was no exception. It earned $1.45 billion at the box office, exceeding the original’s $1.28 billion. This pattern also happened with Inside Out and Inside Out 2, and with Moana and its sequel.

A sequel to Zootopia is predicted to perform well on streaming platforms and further build on the franchise’s popularity. The original Zootopia movie and the Zootopia+ series have already been streamed for over 805 million hours worldwide on Disney+.

Will There Be Zootopia 3?

It took nearly ten years to create a follow-up to the popular 2016 film Zootopia, but the result was worth the wait, suggesting Disney should consider another sequel. However, Disney hasn’t officially announced Zootopia 3 yet. They’re currently working on several other projects, including Toy Story 5, a live-action Moana movie, Ice Age: Boiling Point, Gatto, and another Frozen film.

I got the sense they’re playing things pretty close to the vest when it comes to future plans, admitting they’re just savoring the current success. When I asked about Judy and Nick, the main characters, they acknowledged they’re always at the heart of any story. There’s tons of fan speculation online about where their adventures could go next, and while they aren’t promising anything, they’re clearly thrilled by all the excitement and engagement from the audience. It sounds like they’re open to possibilities, but not making any commitments just yet.

Producer Yvett Merino shared what she believes made the success of Zootopia 2 possible, highlighting how the original 2016 Zootopia film laid a strong foundation. She praised the first movie for creating a vibrant and enjoyable world that feels relatable to everyone.

Zootopia 2 debuts on Disney+ on Mar. 11.
