The Mentalist Surges on Netflix Worldwide 11 Years After Finale

Just two days after it started streaming on Netflix, The Mentalist is already more popular than other shows on the platform. Since arriving on March 1st, the series, starring Simon Baker and Robin Tunney, has quickly become one of the top ten most-watched shows available on Netflix.

While The Mentalist isn’t quite as popular as newer streaming hits like The Night Agent or The Lincoln Lawyer just yet, its recent surge in viewership clearly shows it still resonates with audiences.

Created by Bruno Heller, The Mentalist features Simon Baker as Thomas Jane, a man who used to pretend to be a psychic. He skillfully read people and solved mysteries for entertainment, but his wife was murdered by a serial killer called Red John. Years after the tragedy, Jane begins working as a consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation, using his talents to help solve crimes while secretly searching for the man who killed his wife.

When The Mentalist premiered on CBS in 2008, it quickly became a popular crime drama. The show featured a beloved cast, including Robin Tunney as Teresa Lisbon, Owain Yeoman as Wayne Rigsby, Amanda Righetti as Grace Van Pelt, and Tim Kang as Kimball Cho. It was also praised for its suspenseful, but mostly self-contained, episodes.

Despite not always receiving positive reviews, The Mentalist earned twelve major award nominations during its seven seasons and won four, including the 2009 People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama.

What’s Next for the Star of The Mentalist?

Simon Baker is joining the cast of Taika Waititi’s upcoming film, Klara and the Sun. Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 novel and written by Dahvi Waller, the movie stars Jenna Ortega and features a story about Klara, a robot designed to help a lonely young girl navigate social challenges in a futuristic world.

If you enjoyed Simon Baker’s performance in The Mentalist and are looking for something similar, Amazon Prime Video’s new series Scarpetta might be for you. The show, based on Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels, follows a forensic pathologist as she works to solve crimes across the country. The cast includes Naomi Watts as Kay Scarpetta, alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, and Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley.

You can currently watch The Mentalist on Netflix in most countries and on Hulu in the U.S.
