While everything from the actors to set designs has been closely examined, one particular problem keeps coming up as the biggest source of complaints.
Instead of creating a new story within the Harry Potter universe or expanding on its existing world, the HBO Max series will largely be a remake of the Harry Potter films released between 2001 and 2011. While revisiting a well-known story might seem appealing, it also presents challenges and could potentially hinder the show’s success right from the start.
Interestingly, The Rings of Power actually helped preserve the reputation of The Lord of the Rings. Despite making changes that affected the overall story, the series never tried to overshadow Peter Jackson’s original films. What really sets The Rings of Power apart is its ability to stand on its own as a strong franchise. While the show isn’t without flaws – the rushed pacing, a needless romantic subplot, and changes to established lore aren’t ideal – the recent Harry Potter reboot on HBO demonstrates just how much worse it could have been, even for casual viewers.
