The first three episodes of Paradise nicely introduce the story, but Episode 4, “A Holy Charge,” is where the real adventure starts. This episode is full of unexpected twists, emotional moments – you might even need tissues – and ultimately ends with both sadness and a little bit of hope.
The connection between Annie (Shailene Woodley) and Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) is heartwarming. Over the first few episodes, as they get to know each other, we see two very different people finding common ground. Through honest conversations, Annie is gaining valuable life experience, revealing a hidden wisdom beneath her seemingly innocent exterior. Xavier, in turn, consistently shows his kind heart and strong sense of responsibility, even towards someone he’s only known for a short time – especially considering she saved his life.

This show’s developing relationship between characters feels familiar to other post-apocalyptic stories, like those seen in The Last of Us and Fallout, where unexpected partners team up. It’s refreshing to see more of the outdoor world after the earlier episodes were mostly set in darkness or inside Graceland. This shift gives a hopeful feeling that the world could eventually be restored. The story continues to highlight the goodness in people, as shown when Annie goes into labor and Xavier quickly seeks assistance. The nearby community doesn’t just offer supplies; they actively help deliver the baby.
Annie is keeping something to herself. She agrees to help Xavier find Teri, but only if he takes her to the bunker afterward. Secretly, she’s been monitoring her own health, carefully tracking her symptoms, blood pressure, and heart rate, and she realizes something is seriously wrong. The situation becomes even more mysterious when Xavier goes for help and Annie quietly takes a diner menu and crayons to write a note. It’s then clear she knows her time is limited and she’s leaving a final message for her daughter.
I was absolutely devastated watching Annie give birth. It was one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever seen. She was so sick with preeclampsia, and had known for a while that she wouldn’t make it. Shailene Woodley played those final moments with such raw emotion – it truly sent shivers down my spine. Even as she was dying, she pleaded with Xavier to protect her daughter and make sure she had a connection with Link, and it really highlighted just how crucial Link is to everything that’s happening. It was such a huge ask – she was essentially begging him to rebuild a world where their daughter could thrive – but it was also incredibly touching because she clearly believed in him. It showed so much trust in his ability to make things right.

Honestly, the scene where the baby is born and then tragically dies really got to me, especially because it cut back to the first birth in the bunker. That first mom also had complications, but she survived thanks to an emergency C-section. Seeing Samantha holding her new baby and vowing he’ll one day see the sun, sky, and moon felt…hollow. It didn’t feel hopeful like it should, knowing she’d essentially left others to die – people like Annie. She’s focused on saving those inside the bunker, but it’s clear she’s caused a lot of pain to those she left behind, and it’s hard to see her actions as purely heroic.
Looking back at the scene where Xavier talks about the joys of parenthood, it’s now incredibly sad instead of optimistic. It’s probably then that Annie realizes she can trust Xavier with their child. Her opening up to him – sharing her lifelong fears and tendency to run away – shows a deep level of trust she’s never offered anyone else. This moment feels like Annie’s last brave act – a final attempt to be strong, accept what’s coming, and do what’s best for her daughter, even if it means letting go.
As a film buff, I’ve been thinking about Samantha and her bunker, and it struck me that while it seems like she’s doing something good, it’s really a pretty stark illustration of how divided society is by class and privilege. The scene with the woman giving birth really hits home – without the bunker, she and her baby wouldn’t have made it. Samantha talks about ‘saving the world,’ but it’s clear she only means saving a select few. But it’s not all bleak! That baby, though we don’t even know its name, feels like a symbol of hope, and a challenge to people like Samantha who think they can decide who lives and who doesn’t.

The show took an unexpected turn when Xavier unexpectedly became a father during his travels in Paradise. This new development complicates his journey, but also gives him a stronger reason to keep going, as the child represents a continuation of Annie’s life. This also strongly suggests Xavier and Link are destined to cross paths. Interestingly, Link dreams about Xavier early in the episode, and Xavier experiences the same vision when he sees Link’s ID. Xavier admits he’s been having premonitions – memories of events that haven’t happened yet. This adds a science fiction element to the show and hints that their eventual meeting will be a crucial moment.
Xavier finally arrives in Atlanta and encounters a strange young man who says he’s Teri’s close friend. The man claims Teri was there, but someone has taken her. Xavier isn’t sure if he can trust this person or if he’s being truthful. Episode 5 will probably reveal the man’s identity, explain what happened to Teri, and show how Xavier plans to rescue her.
The latest episode of Paradise keeps viewers hooked with its mix of peaceful scenes and thrilling tension. A major threat from the environment hangs over everything – the Earth could soon become unbearably hot – but the characters themselves don’t know what’s coming. Xavier is determined to stay with Teri, and now he’s fiercely protective of their baby, seeing it as his most important responsibility. This 53-minute episode builds suspense as viewers realize the danger the characters are unaware of.
