Steam is the leading online store for video games and a hugely profitable platform for Valve. However, Valve’s plans for new hardware in 2026 are facing difficulties, and one of their upcoming devices might be canceled before it’s even released.
Okay, so Valve is crushing it right now with Deadlock. It’s one of the few live-service games that’s actually doing well, which is kinda rare these days. But the biggest news? Everyone’s saying Half-Life 3 is finally coming out in 2026! Even with Grand Theft Auto 6 on the way, I think Half-Life 3 is going to be massive. Seriously, I’m hyped!
The Steam Machine Could Be Too Expensive For General Audiences
Valve continues to succeed with its games, but external issues are impacting its hardware efforts. In November 2025, they revealed the Steam Machine, a new computer designed to be both portable and powerful enough for today’s games.
The biggest concern surrounding the Steam Machine has always been its cost, and Valve has been upfront about that. They’ve stated they won’t be lowering the price by covering some of the costs themselves, unlike Sony and Nintendo with their consoles.
Things have gotten more difficult for the Steam Machine since it was first announced. Rising prices for RAM, driven by companies buying up computer parts, could make the Steam Machine too expensive for customers, even before it’s released. This could ultimately hinder its success.
The component shortages are impacting more than just Valve. There’s talk that both the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox might be delayed until the cost of parts decreases. Fortunately, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all currently have consoles available that they can continue to support with new games and already have established player bases.
Valve’s Steam Machine was their attempt to break into the PC market, but concerns quickly arose about its potential cost. Launching it now could be risky for Valve, as even their most loyal fans might hesitate if the price is too steep.
The Steam Deck Is Leaving Production
The Steam Deck is facing similar problems to the Steam Machine, and it’s now very difficult to purchase a new one. Production has been slowed down by shortages of important components like memory and RAM, so those wanting a Steam Deck may need to look for used options.
If things were different, the Steam Deck’s eventual replacement might seem obvious now. But the same technical problems that hindered the Steam Machine would probably impact a Steam Deck 2 as well, so don’t expect Valve to announce a new handheld gaming device anytime soon.
The Steam Deck proved surprisingly popular for Valve, and those who missed out initially can still find one on the used market. However, this success doesn’t solve a larger issue for the company – it seems Valve is trying to innovate in a particularly unstable market. This instability poses a significant risk to Valve’s expansion into hardware, and could signal the end of their efforts to become a tech manufacturer.
If current trends continue, Gabe Newell might not be able to keep buying expensive yachts, especially with the cost of new hardware.
