The latest Yellowstone spinoff is breaking pattern, and is all the better for it.
Taylor Sheridan’s new show, Marshals, is quickly becoming popular with viewers around the world. It breaks from the usual stories told in the Yellowstone universe and picks up after the events of that series. Marshals centers on Kayce Dutton as he joins a specialized team of US Marshals, working to combat serious organized crime throughout Montana.
According to FlixPatrol, the show Marshals is a hit around the world, quickly becoming one of the most popular titles on Paramount+. As of March 2, 2026, it’s ranked in the Top 10 in many countries, including Number 2 in both the United States and Australia, and Number 4 in Canada and Argentina.
Unlike other Yellowstone spinoffs like 1883 and 1923 which told stories about the Dutton family’s past, Marshals does something different. It’s a sequel, meaning it takes place after the original series and shows what happens to Kayce next. While those other shows looked backward, Marshals focuses on the future of the Yellowstone universe.
Unlike other Yellowstone spinoffs, this new series doesn’t center around ranch life or the Dutton family’s ranch. It’s much more of an action-driven, case-of-the-week type of show, a big change from the storylines Kayce dealt with in the original Yellowstone. Despite these differences, the series has quickly become a huge hit.
While audiences seem to really enjoy the show, critical reception has been more varied. Currently, it has a 7.4/10 rating on IMDb based on over 266 viewer reviews, suggesting strong positive feedback from fans. However, professional critics are less enthusiastic, giving it a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes after seven reviews.
As a huge fan of the Yellowstone universe, I’m really encouraged by how well Lawmen: Bass Reeves (formerly Marshals) is doing on streaming. It feels like a good sign for what’s to come with all the other spinoffs they’ve got planned. Speaking of which, I’m especially excited about The Dutton Ranch, which will focus on Beth and Rip – I heard they’re already filming and it’s coming to Paramount+ soon!
Now that the show Marshals is quickly gaining popularity on streaming platforms, it’s likely to attract even more viewers. CBS is already preparing for season two by gathering the writers, even though the show hasn’t been officially renewed yet – a strong sign they believe in its future.
New episodes of Marshals air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and stream next day on Paramount+.
