The producers of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are hinting at revealing more about the newest, most enigmatic alien species in the Star Trek universe. With an 88% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is almost over, with the last two episodes available on Paramount+ on March 5th and March 12th.
In addition to Humans, Klingons, and Betazoids, the main characters in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy include three newly created alien races. Kerrice Brooks plays SAM, a Kasqian who is made of holograms. George Hawkins portrays Darem Reymi, a Khionian – a species resembling fish. And Bella Shepard plays Genesis Lythe, a Dar-Sha, known for their distinctive grooved eyebrows, about whom little is currently known.
TrekMovie recently interviewed Noga Landau and Gaia Violo, the executive producers of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Landau co-showruns the series with Alex Kurtzman, while Violo created it. They discussed the enigmatic Dar-Sha and offered some additional details about Genesis Lythe and her people. Here’s what they had to say:
When we established the Dar-sha as a nomadic people, our prosthetics team asked what we envisioned for their appearance. We told them we wanted them to look like stunning, otherworldly beings who’d just stepped out of Burning Man – and that became the basis for their design. [laughs]
The debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy introduced Genesis Lythe, whose upbringing was unique – she’s the daughter of a Starfleet Admiral and spent her childhood traveling on starships, making Earth her first visit to the planet. The show’s executive producers have also confirmed that the Dar-Sha are a nomadic people. The casting of Bella Shepard as the first Dar-Sha is particularly interesting, as the Dar-Sha are described as visually striking aliens reminiscent of the art and style found at Burning Man.
In the sixth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, viewers learned something new about the Dar-Sha. Commander Lura Thok (Gina Yashere) told Genesis, “You use your eyes with the precision of a hengra,” hinting at the Dar-Sha’s special ability. As it turned out, Genesis’s incredibly sharp vision was what allowed them to stop the Furies by detecting their hidden ship.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Bella Shepard, who plays a Dar-Sha in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, mentioned that the biggest challenge of the role was not having any other Dar-Sha characters to interact with, and the limited information available about their culture. Here’s what she had to say:
The main drawback is feeling isolated – I haven’t had the chance to interact with anyone else from my species yet. Others, like Karim with the Klingons and George with the Khionians, had that experience early on. It’s also a bit challenging not having a clear understanding of my people’s culture or where things are. However, it’s also exciting to be able to build everything from scratch.
Genesis is a promising and ambitious cadet who dreams of commanding a starship, but struggles with hidden doubts. The final episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 might offer a deeper look into her background and the Dar-Sha people. If not, season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy could explore the Dar-Sha further, and potentially introduce Genesis’s highly-ranked father.
