Fans have wondered for years if Johnny Depp would return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Now, a key figure involved with the films has shared some encouraging news, suggesting a return is more likely than many expected.
All hope isn’t lost on Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean 6 return
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that plans for a sixth film are still moving forward with the popular captain at the helm, dismissing recent rumors to the contrary. He made this clear in a recent interview with The Direct at the Producers Guild Awards.
When questioned about reports that a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie was being made without Johnny Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer firmly denied the claims. He stated that he wants Depp to be involved in the film, saying, “If it’s up to me, he’ll be in it.”
Jerry Bruckheimer has produced all five previous Pirates of the Caribbean films and played a key role in making them successful. Because he’s continuing to work on the sixth film, he likely has a lot of say in how it’s made. His public support for bringing Johnny Depp back as Jack Sparrow is a strong indication that the character will return.
The timing of this news is important. Reports from February 2026 hinted the next Pirates of the Caribbean film might center on Jack Sparrow’s son, possibly introducing a new main character. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s statements suggest Johnny Depp doesn’t necessarily have to be excluded. A brief appearance or supporting role for Depp could smoothly connect the original story with any new characters, similar to how other long-running franchises have managed changes in leadership.
While it depends on the script, there’s growing hope that Johnny Depp might return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. A source close to Depp suggested in July 2023 that a return wasn’t out of the question, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in August 2025 that he’d spoken with Depp about it, believing Depp would be open to reprising his role if the story was right.
For now, fans have to wait and watch for official confirmation.
