I’m really looking forward to the upcoming movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, especially the chance we might see Grand Admiral Thrawn in a live-action Star Wars film. Since the movie is expected to have Din Djarin facing off against the remaining Imperial forces, I’m getting more and more excited about the main villain they’ve chosen.
With the latest trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu, fans are now wondering if Grand Admiral Thrawn will appear in the next Star Wars movie – the first one released in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Will See Din Djarin Tracking Down Imperial Remnant Warlords
The latest trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu reveals that Din Djarin will be working with Col. Ward (Sigourney Weaver) from the New Republic. His mission: to track down and eliminate Imperial leaders who are still trying to maintain control in the Outer Rim after the Empire was defeated.
The powerful warlord shown in the trailer—played by Jonny Coyne—previously appeared in season 3 of The Mandalorian. There, he was a member of the Imperial Shadow Council, working to prepare for Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return and rebuild the Empire’s military strength.
Between seasons 3 of The Mandalorian and the new Star Wars movie, the first season of Ahsoka aired. This series introduced Grand Admiral Thrawn into live-action and brought his years-long exile from another galaxy to a close.
At the end of Ahsoka season 1, Grand Admiral Thrawn has returned to the main Star Wars galaxy. He’s now working with the Nightsisters on Dathomir, likely building up his forces and planning a large-scale attack on the New Republic.
As a fan, it feels pretty likely that Grand Admiral Thrawn will show up in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Lucasfilm has really set him up as the big villain for their new stories, and with Din Djarin going after the leaders of what’s left of the Empire, it just makes sense that Thrawn would be involved somehow.
I’m Expecting Thrawn To Make His Big-Screen Debut (Even If It’s Just To Set Up Ahsoka Season 2)
Although The Mandalorian and Grogu probably won’t focus on Grand Admiral Thrawn, a quick appearance by him seems very possible. It could be just a brief scene at the end, establishing him as the main Imperial villain controlling the various warlords Din Djarin has been dealing with.
If Thrawn appears, it will likely set the stage for the second season of Ahsoka, which is expected to include a large space battle with Thrawn and Admiral Ackbar – a detail confirmed by Dave Filoni.
Fans can expect to see Grand Admiral Thrawn’s rival, Zeb Orrelios, in both The Mandalorian & Grogu and season two of Ahsoka this year. This will connect Din Djarin’s story with the New Republic heroes who share a significant history with Thrawn.
Even if Thrawn doesn’t show up in The Mandalorian and Grogu, everything seems to be leading to Dave Filoni’s new New Republic series. That series is expected to heavily borrow from the classic Heir to the Empire story, which can’t really be told without Thrawn. Because of this, many fans believe we’ll see Thrawn on the big screen this year – he’s become a major, almost Thanos-level, threat in the Star Wars universe.
The Mandalorian & Grogu releases in theaters on May 22nd from Lucasfilm.
