Samwise Gamgee, often called Sam, is a memorable character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s book and Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy. He consistently demonstrated courage, loyalty, and perseverance, offering crucial support to Frodo Baggins during his journey to destroy the One Ring. Many fans believe Sam is the real hero of The Lord of the Rings.
We often remember Sam’s bravery after the Fellowship broke apart, especially when he fearlessly swam after Frodo and continued the journey to Mordor with him. However, a subtle detail in the book The Lord of the Rings suggests Sam performed another incredible act much earlier: resisting the One Ring’s power and handling it without being corrupted, even before leaving Rivendell.
A Minor Detail From The Fellowship of the Ring Had Lore-Shaking Implications
In the beginning of Frodo’s adventure in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, he carried the One Ring in his pocket. However, while staying in Rivendell, he began wearing it on a chain around his neck for better security. This change was noted in the book, but the movie didn’t highlight it.
In The Fellowship of the Ring, Tolkien writes that Frodo awoke to find the One Ring hanging around his neck on a new, delicate yet strong chain. This seemingly small detail suggests someone had access to the Ring while Frodo slept and took the time to attach it – indicating they possessed it for a period.
I remember reading about how just seeing the One Ring could fill someone with this awful, greedy desire. But actually touching it? That seemed to make things so much worse. Even Gandalf, who was incredibly powerful, was hesitant to touch it – in the books he only did it quickly, and in the movies he avoided it altogether! It’s scary to think what could have happened if the Ring had corrupted him. It would have amplified his already immense power, making him unbelievably dangerous.
The situation was similar with Sam. Neither Gandalf nor Elrond would have risked putting the One Ring on a chain themselves, and they wouldn’t have entrusted the task to just any Elf in Rivendell. Therefore, it’s most likely Sam was the one who did it. Even if Sam had taken the Ring for himself, Gandalf and Elrond probably wouldn’t have seen a simple hobbit gardener as a serious danger.
Samwise Gamgee’s Willpower Was Indomitable in The Lord of the Rings
As demonstrated in The Lord of the Rings, Sam was unusually strong against the Ring’s power. He took on the responsibility of carrying the Ring when Frodo was believed to be dead after fighting Shelob, and immediately gave it back to Frodo after rescuing him from the Tower of Cirith Ungol. This showed his strength of character, because if he could resist the Ring’s pull while exhausted and hungry, he would certainly have been able to do so in a safe and comfortable place like an Elven realm.
It would be fitting for Sam to wear the One Ring on a chain, considering his unwavering support of Frodo. Throughout their journey, Sam handled practical tasks like cooking and carrying supplies, allowing Frodo to focus entirely on their mission. He remained just as devoted while Frodo rested in Rivendell, staying close by his side as Gandalf noted. Perhaps one of Sam’s most remarkable acts of loyalty in The Lord of the Rings went unnoticed by many viewers.
