Even though Orange is the New Black ended almost seven years ago, it’s still incredibly popular on streaming services. The show has recently seen a comeback and remains one of the top choices for viewers renting or buying through the Apple TV Store.
According to Flix Patrol, as of February 27th, Orange is the New Black is the fifth most popular TV show on the platform in the United States. It also climbed one spot in the rankings just one day after becoming available.
Although the Jenji Kohan series did better than shows like Scrubs, The Girlfriend Experience, and Designated Survivor, it didn’t reach the level of Netflix’s biggest hits, such as Love Story and Survivor.
What Happens in Orange Is the New Black?
Inspired by Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, the show follows the lives of women in prison at Litchfield Penitentiary, exploring their struggles with love, addiction, identity, and the challenges of a biased system.
One of Netflix’s first and most popular original series, Orange is the New Black, starred a talented ensemble cast including Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Laura Prepon, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, Dascha Polanco, Jason Biggs, and Laverne Cox.
Beyond a strong cast, Orange is the New Black stood out for its wit, insightful look at society, and willingness to mix different television styles. With a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show received significant praise over its seven seasons.
I was so thrilled to see Orange is the New Black get the recognition it deserved! It racked up an amazing 16 Emmy nominations and actually won four Emmys, including one for Uzo Aduba as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series back in 2015. And it wasn’t just the Emmys – the cast also won five Screen Actors Guild awards, which really highlighted their incredible teamwork, especially with wins for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series three years in a row from 2015 to 2017. Plus, the six Golden Globe and one BAFTA nomination were fantastic too!
Danielle Brooks Revealed What Peacemaker Has In Common With Orange is the New Black
Even though Litchfield Penitentiary isn’t part of the same world as the DC Universe, the shows Peacemaker and Orange Is the New Black actually have a lot in common. Besides both featuring actress Brooks – who recently returned as Leota Adebayo in Peacemaker‘s second season – the shows also had similar release strategies, as Brooks explained to ScreenRant last spring.
Brooks explained that when they made the first season of Peacemaker, it was during the pandemic, so they didn’t do any publicity events or have a traditional premiere. Despite this, the show quickly gained a dedicated following. “The fans really connected with it and loved it,” she said.
Brooks sees parallels between the current situation and the early days of Orange Is the New Black on Netflix. As one of the first shows to really gain traction on the platform, she feels a similar energy now with James Gunn leading DC. She describes Peacemaker as a groundbreaking project – one of Gunn’s first ventures in the DC Universe – and is optimistic about its potential for growth and expansion.
You can watch Orange is the New Black on Netflix right now. If you don’t have Netflix, you can buy or rent episodes from places like the Apple TV Store.
