Major spoilers for the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 premiere are below!
Ever since the first trailer for Season 2 of Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was released, the show has been hinting at the arrival of a powerful new monster called Titan X. This creature is being presented as a massive threat to humanity, on par with Godzilla and Kong. While its real name remains a secret, fans have been collecting clues and developing theories about what Titan X might be. Some think it could be Tiamat, the monster seen in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Others believe it might be Na Kika, a kraken-like creature for the Monsterverse. Even older Godzilla enemies are being considered, with Titan X’s appearance possibly resembling Biollante.
The most exciting fan theory about the newest monster in the Monsterverse suggests it’s a well-known character now in the public domain. Initially dismissed as just speculation, the first episode of Legacy of Monsters hinted that this theory might actually be correct. With several episodes still to come, the show could reveal Titan X’s true identity. It’s clear the series is investing heavily in this new monster, potentially introducing a major character that could change the entire franchise.
One Crazy Titan X Theory Points to an Elder God

Some fans believe that Titan X, a powerful monster in the Godzilla universe, might actually be Cthulhu. Cthulhu is a massive, ancient creature created by author H.P. Lovecraft in his 1928 story, ‘The Call of Cthulhu.’ This cosmic being is one of the Great Old Ones – a group of powerful deities worshipped as gods by a dedicated cult. Cthulhu is known for his terrifying appearance: an octopus-like head with tentacles, combined with dragon-like wings, making him a recognizable figure in science fiction. Legend says he sleeps in a sunken city at the bottom of the ocean.
While the ancient cosmic being Cthulhu hasn’t officially appeared in the Monsterverse films, Godzilla and all the giant monsters in that universe are clearly inspired by Lovecraft’s original creature. The idea of massive beasts endangering people, and even the way these monsters look, all show Cthulhu’s influence, extending beyond just the Monsterverse. Now, details about the new monster, Titan X, are starting to show even more similarities to Lovecraft’s creation, going beyond just tentacles and a connection to the water.
‘Monarch’s Season 2 Premiere Has Faith in Titan X

Apple TV
The first episode of Monarch Season 2 reveals Titan X, briefly showing its massive size. While the creature isn’t fully seen, viewers catch glimpses of its tentacles and face as it breaks out of a rocky prison. It then rises from the Hollow Earth and swims away into the ocean. Throughout the episode, a lot of time is dedicated to explaining Titan X’s origins, which draws clear parallels to the mythical creature Cthulhu.
In 1957, Lee, Keiko, and Bill find themselves unwelcome in a secluded village. Strange symbols, reminiscent of those connected to Lovecraftian monsters, are visible everywhere. After a tense encounter at the local bar with secretive villagers who seem to know about a creature called Titan, a kind woman warns Bill to leave, fearing for his and his friends’ safety. She reveals the shocking truth: the villagers worship Titan X as a deity.
The villagers have built an entire system of beliefs around the Titan, believing it protects and provides for them. They take this belief seriously enough to resort to violence against anyone who doesn’t share it. Later that night, the group is led to a cave where they’re shown ancient paintings of people worshipping a huge, tentacled monster. Although the paintings don’t definitively prove that Titan X is Cthulhu, they strongly suggest a connection between this new monster and the legendary cosmic being.
Will the King of the Monsters Face a God?
As a huge monster movie fan, I’ve been thinking about Titanus X, and honestly, it’s starting to feel a lot like Cthulhu. I mean, it’s massive, has those crazy tentacles, and even seems to have a whole religion built around it. The best part? Cthulhu is in the public domain, so the Monsterverse could totally use him without any legal issues! That would be amazing – it’d finally deliver on the seriously epic threat the trailers for Monarch Season 2 have been hinting at. But, and this is a big ‘but’, throwing a god-level being like Cthulhu into the mix could really throw off the whole balance of the franchise. I don’t think the movies would want to risk that. While seeing Godzilla and Kong struggle against that would be incredible, it might just be too much, especially where the story is right now.
Titan X shared a striking resemblance to Na Kika, with similar tentacles and overall form, aligning with the monster’s description. Na Kika first appeared in the novelization of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and is a cephalopod-like creature whose design echoes illustrations from Godzilla comics, matching the brief appearance in the first episode of the Monarch series. Because Na Kika is an original creation, there are no copyright concerns, making it a practical choice for the show. While Titan X isn’t an exact copy of Na Kika, the series may be freely adapting the monster’s characteristics without being strictly tied to the details of the novelization.
There are nine episodes left in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, and the full story behind the kaiju might unfold slowly as the characters piece together its past. While Titan X could turn out to be Na Kika, the show’s focus on the religious significance of this creature and its similarities to Lovecraft’s work suggest that Cthulhu might be a key inspiration – or even the actual source. The influence of Cthulhu is definitely clear.
