Jake Gyllenhaal discussed the possibility of reprising his role as Mysterio from Spider-Man: Far From Home within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He first played the Spider-Man villain alongside Tom Holland in 2019, following the huge success of Avengers: Endgame. Gyllenhaal’s next project is The Bride, a gothic horror film directed by his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Jake Gyllenhaal on Mysterio’s return possibility
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jake Gyllenhaal discussed what he’d like to see happen with his character, Mysterio, if he were to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse.
When asked about a possible return of his character, the actor said he hadn’t been informed of any plans and replied, “Oh man, I’m… I’m not the right person to ask about that.”
Fans have been debating what happened to Mysterio after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. The movie ends with him seemingly being killed by a malfunctioning drone, but a surprise post-credits scene shows him revealing Spider-Man’s secret identity. When asked directly about Mysterio’s fate in July 2019, producer Amy Pascal intentionally remained vague, telling Comicbook.com, “You don’t know.” This ambiguity sparked a lot of discussion and speculation among fans online about whether he was truly gone.
In a 2022 interview with ComicBook Resources, Spider-Man: No Way Home writer Chris McKenna revealed some concept art that showed Mysterio battling Doctor Strange. While this scene didn’t make it into the final film, McKenna explained that opening up the multiverse in the MCU led to many discussions about which characters to include. They ultimately focused on using characters who wouldn’t overshadow the main story or Spider-Man himself.
