The Snyderverse might not be dead after all, as Justice League sequels may yet see the light of day.
As a moviegoer, I have to say Zack Snyder’s work at DC is hugely important to how their live-action universe developed. His films really defined the early days of what we knew as the DCEU, though they definitely weren’t without their critics. The whole situation with 2017’s Justice League was a mess, honestly. It felt like the film was taken out of Snyder’s hands and given to Joss Whedon to finish, which ultimately led to a lot of fan disappointment.
Following a long online push from fans, Zack Snyder returned to DC to fully realize his vision for the iconic superhero team. Zack Snyder’s Justice League significantly altered the original movie, giving the villain Darkseid a much larger and more impactful role. While DC currently doesn’t have any further Snyder projects planned, that situation could potentially change in the future.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Zack Snyder discussed the possibility of making sequels to his version of Justice League – specifically, Justice League 2 and Justice League 3.
During an interview, Josh Horowitz questioned director Zack Snyder about whether the planned Justice League movies could still come to life as a comic book or animated project. Snyder seemed enthusiastic about the possibility.
Honestly, we’ve spent a lot of time imagining it. It’s incredible to think about all the possibilities out there, and whatever shape those dreams might take… it would be just phenomenal.
The movie Justice League premiered on November 17, 2017, after significant portions were re-filmed by director Joss Whedon, known for The Avengers. It ultimately earned $661.3 million in theaters. However, with a production budget of $300 million (including the cost of the reshoots), the film needed to make between $600 and $750 million to be considered profitable, meaning it wasn’t a big financial hit.
As a huge cinema fan, I was thrilled when Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally dropped on HBO Max on March 18, 2021. And it really delivered! Critics gave it a solid 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but what was even more amazing was the 92% audience score – it totally proved the years-long wait was worth it. The movie was so well-received that fans immediately started asking for Snyder’s original plans for a Justice League sequel to become a reality.
Zack Snyder has often hinted at continuing his vision for the Justice League. Most recently, on December 5, 2025, he celebrated reaching 500,000 followers on Instagram, expressing his affection for the characters and saying he hoped to tell more stories with them. Earlier, on April 12, 2024, he discussed the possibility of continuing the ‘Snyderverse’ through animated projects in an interview with Empire Magazine.
The director expressed enthusiasm for the idea, saying he thought animated sequels to his Justice League films would be “fun and cool.” Almost two years later, Snyder still thinks this is a viable option and has even discussed it with others. Currently, the new DC Universe (DCU) doesn’t have any Justice League movies planned. This creates an opportunity for Snyder’s vision – often called the Snyderverse – to return, particularly as an animated series, without competing with the main DCU films.
