The new Scream movie, officially titled Scream 7, is getting mixed reviews before it even hits theaters. People who have seen it early have different opinions about where the story is going. The film is directed by Kevin Williamson and brings back Neve Campbell as her iconic character, Sidney Prescott.
Scream 7 gets first reactions
First reactions to Scream 7 are starting to appear online before the movie hits theaters, and people have very different opinions about it. The film is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on February 27, 2026.
The story picks up with Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, finding herself caught up in another wave of terror when a new Ghostface appears. She’s been trying to live a peaceful life, but now her daughter, played by Isabel May, is in danger, forcing Sidney to confront the past once more.
Initial reactions on X, formerly known as Twitter, are mixed. One critic, Manuel São Bento, called the new sequel a disappointing entry that relies too much on familiar digital aesthetics instead of building genuine tension. While he complimented Isabel May’s performance, he suggested this seventh installment might be the weakest in the series so far.
I have to agree with Griffin Schiller on this one – this movie really felt like the absolute worst soap opera you could imagine. It honestly played out like something you’d see on basic cable, not a feature film. And the reveal of the killer? Don’t even get me started – it was a completely baffling and unsatisfying afterthought. Seriously, it felt like they just threw it in there at the last minute.
Many viewers reacted very positively to the film. Hunter Bolding described it as “BRUTAL” and especially praised the shocking and impressive kills. He also highlighted Isabel May’s performance, calling her a standout alongside Neve Campbell’s return. Empeds Casul thought the movie had some of the best kills in the entire series and was happy to see the story focus on Sidney and her family again. He enjoyed it so much he said he couldn’t wait to watch it again and expressed his long-standing love for the franchise.
As a big fan of the Scream movies, I have to say, Scream 7 feels like exactly what this series needed! I was thrilled to see the two main characters back as the central focus, and honestly, having the original writer back in the director’s chair was a brilliant decision. It really feels like a fresh start while still honoring what made the first films so great.
