Okay, movie fans, huge warning: spoilers ahead for the second part of Bridgerton Season 4! It finally dropped on Netflix, just a few weeks after the first four episodes. Honestly, Part 1 left us all hanging with so many questions, but the biggest one on everyone’s mind was whether Benedict and Sophie would actually get together. I’ve been waiting to find out!
Because Benedict was a Bridgerton—a member of the nobility—and Sophie was a servant (or the secret, illegitimate daughter of a nobleman), their marriage would never be accepted by society. Sophie also firmly refused to become Benedict’s mistress. This left them stuck in a difficult and painful situation at the end of the first part of their story.
The second part of the show didn’t just explain what happened between Benedict and Sophie’s relationship; it also revealed surprising information about key characters, exciting plot twists, and what fans can expect in the future.
The Fate Of Sophie And Benedict’s Relationship Explained

Throughout the fourth season, Sophie and Benedict struggled with several difficult challenges. Initially, these stemmed from the differences in their social positions—they were drawn to each other but felt a relationship was impossible. However, their issues became more serious as the season progressed.
Sophie was arrested mainly because her cruel stepmother, Araminta, claimed she stole shoe clips and pretended to be someone important. Araminta knew Sophie had secretly gone to Violet Bridgerton’s masquerade ball, which fueled her accusations.
It looked like Benedict and Sophie’s romance might not have a happy ending – they were far apart and Sophie was even in prison! But thanks to some clever maneuvering by Violet, the family matriarch, they ultimately found their way to happiness.
The Bridgertons successfully claimed Sophie as Benedict’s fiancé, which allowed them to take her into their care while she waited for her sentencing. During this time, they discovered a surprising and troubling truth: Araminta was responsible for much more than just petty theft. She had actually stolen Sophie’s inheritance, falsely telling her that she hadn’t been included in her father, Lord Penwood’s, will.
Once the truth came out, Araminta had no choice but to stop trying to have Sophie imprisoned—or face even worse consequences. The Bridgertons used this to their benefit, convincing Araminta to go along with a false story that Sophie was only a distant relative of Lord Penwood.
The story was convincing enough for Queen Charlotte to give her blessing to the marriage, removing all obstacles for Sophie and Benedict. The end of the show featured a joyful wedding scene, and even Anthony, Benedict’s older brother, conceded he’d been wrong to doubt their relationship.

Sophie and Benedict weren’t the only couple hinting at a possible wedding this season. Throughout the first half of the story, a close connection grew between Violet Bridgerton and Lord Marcus Anderson, suggesting real feelings. This culminated in a surprising proposal from Marcus to Violet in the second half.
Surprisingly, Violet first agreed, but later changed her mind. After considering things further and making up a few delays, she realized she wasn’t ready to give up her current lifestyle and independence.
Honestly, it totally makes sense why Violet did what she did. Watching her over the last four seasons, you’ve seen her really grow into someone who knows her own worth and isn’t afraid to go after what she wants. She finally started thinking about herself, which was amazing to see! So even though she has feelings for Marcus, she wasn’t about to sacrifice her own happiness, and I really respect that.
John Sterling’s Death & What It Means For Francesca
LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX
Okay, so everyone else in Season 4 was getting all the romantic feels, but Francesca’s story just absolutely wrecked me. Part 2 dropped this bombshell – her husband, John Sterling, just…died in his sleep. It was so sudden and they didn’t really give much of an explanation, which made it even more shocking. Apparently, it’s pretty much the same in the books – he just got a headache and then…that was it. Seriously heartbreaking!
After her marriage unexpectedly ended, Francesca will focus on rebuilding her life in future seasons. The show has already hinted at what that might look like, particularly through her growing connection with John’s cousin, Michaela, who seems to have feelings for her.
The show follows the spirit of the Bridgerton novels, but it changes the timing of Francesca’s romance. In the books, Francesca didn’t develop feelings for Michael (who is male) until after her husband, John, passed away. However, the series shows Francesca immediately attracted to Michaela from the moment they meet.
As a fan, I’m pretty confident we’re going to see Francesca and Michaela explore a romantic connection in future seasons. It’s exciting, but I’m also really curious to see how the show navigates that, considering the strict social rules of the Ton – a relationship between two women wouldn’t exactly be accepted by high society, so it’s going to be a complex storyline.
Who Is The New Lady Whistledown?
LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX
A major surprise in the second part of Season 4 was the appearance of a new Lady Whistledown. Penelope, now a Bridgerton after previously being a Featherington, had stopped writing gossip with the Queen’s approval and was pursuing other writing projects. But despite Penelope’s decision to stop, someone else has secretly started writing as Lady Whistledown again.
The identity of the new Lady Whistledown remains a mystery, and this reveal is sure to spark plenty of speculation. Many will likely suspect Eloise, given her previous interest in Whistledown. However, Eloise seems an unlikely candidate, especially since she’s expected to be actively seeking a match herself next season.
Cressida Cowper’s return in Season 4, Part 2 has led some to wonder if she could be the new Whistledown, but that seems improbable. She already demonstrated in Season 3 that she wasn’t cut out to be a writer when she unsuccessfully tried to pose as the famous gossip columnist.
Even though it’s disappointing, it could be quite a while – possibly several years – before we find out who the new Whistledown is, as the reveal will likely be spread across multiple seasons.
How Bridgerton Season 4, Part 2, Sets Up Season 5
LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX
Now that Sophie and Benedict’s story has finished, the next season of Bridgerton will likely center around Eloise. Throughout the recent season, Eloise often seemed lonely and like an outsider. Moments where she walked in on Francesca and Penelope discussing married life clearly showed her feeling excluded.
Eloise isn’t necessarily searching for a husband, and even before her romantic storyline, that wasn’t her focus. However, she’s now dealing with complex emotions, making Season 5 a natural time to delve into her story. The wedding of Sophie and Benedict shown after the credits seems to suggest this will happen.
We don’t have a confirmed release date for Bridgerton Season 5 yet, but Season 4 Part 2 ended with lots of exciting storylines and unanswered questions, setting the stage for more to come.
