The people behind the new Scrubs revival recently discussed a surprising turn of events involving the characters JD (played by Zach Braff) and Elliot (played by Sarah Chalke).
The season 8 finale of Scrubs showed JD imagining a future with him and Elliot married. While the ninth season confirmed they did eventually tie the knot – a storyline many fans disliked – the revival series reveals they’ve since gotten divorced, taking place almost twenty years after the original show ended.
Bill Lawrence, creator of the show, told Deadline that he chose to split up the popular couple to reflect how unpredictable life can be. Unlike the original Scrubs, which had a happy ending with JD’s life all figured out, the new series aims for a more realistic portrayal of adulthood. Lawrence wanted to show that life doesn’t usually work out as neatly as it did in the original finale.
Lawrence explained that the decision to split up the characters wasn’t made easily. The creative team was initially unsure, but they ultimately felt exploring JD and Elliot as co-parents would create more interesting stories than showing them as a happily married couple.
So, here’s what happened with the final season of Scrubs. It ends with a hopeful thought – just for a moment, I wanted to believe everything worked out perfectly. We all felt that way, and while I’m thankful for my life, it’s true that things don’t always go as planned.
I really think writers should focus on experiences they understand. Our showrunner, Aseem Batra – she gave me the okay to share this – went through a big life change after my time on Scrubs. She went from being married with a young child to being a single parent, co-parenting with someone else. It’s not necessarily a negative situation, and it’s her own unique path. I think we all see this in life – some relationships work out, and others don’t.
Initially, I wasn’t convinced, but they kept emphasizing that if you watch all nine seasons of Scrubs, you’d be confident Turk and Carla would end up together. Then you’d realize J.D. and Elliot barely had a season and a half of being a couple, and didn’t seem as stable.
It’s a useful way to move the story forward. It doesn’t signal the end of their journey, but it reflects a common challenge adults face.
The actors who played the divorced couple also shared their thoughts on the storyline. Sarah Chalke, who played Elliot, said she wasn’t bothered by the split at all, and actually thought it was a good move. She explained that it would open up opportunities for more drama and comedy. She also pointed out that the on-again, off-again relationship between their characters was a key part of what made them interesting, and that wouldn’t have been possible if they’d stayed married.
I really enjoyed it! I thought starting the new show with a couple facing challenges was a great idea. It allows for much more comedic and dramatic potential when a relationship isn’t perfect. We spent a lot of time exploring the ups and downs of a couple in the original Scrubs, and I felt revisiting that dynamic – creating conflict and seeing how they navigate it – was the best approach for this new version. We had a lot of fun with it.
Zach Braff explained that the season 8 finale – the one most fans consider the true ending of Scrubs – concluded with a montage showing J.D.’s vision of a perfect life. He agreed with Bill Lawrence that real life isn’t always ideal, and divorce is common. This would create an interesting contrast with the happily married couple, Turk and Carla, from the original series, adding depth to the show.
What J.D. imagines in the final scene of Season 8 represents his hopes for the future, but that future isn’t guaranteed, particularly as life changes with age. Unexpected things happen – not all marriages last, and sometimes life doesn’t go as planned.
Seeing Turk and Carla’s strong marriage really highlights the differences in our situation, as we’re now figuring out how to co-parent and work together. It was a good way to show the many different paths relationships can take as people get older.
Scrubs airs new episodes every Wednesday at 8:00 PM ET and 5:00 PM PT on ABC.
