Spartacus Returns to Streaming Charts After Spinoff Success

Wow, it’s been thirteen years since the original wrapped up, but it’s back, and it’s making a splash! As a critic, I’m really not surprised. This show, spearheaded by Steven S. DeKnight – the guy behind Daredevil – quickly shot to the top of the charts, becoming one of the most-rented titles on Apple TV in the US this week. It’s clearly still got what it takes to compete in this crowded streaming landscape.

According to data from Flix Patrol as of February 25th, the violent historical drama is currently the second most popular show, trailing only A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Spartacus has surpassed several other well-known programs in streaming rankings, including Love Story, Designated Survivor, and Twin Peaks. The series is also gaining international traction, ranking sixth on Catchplay’s list of the top 10 weekly shows in Indonesia.

The show Spartacus, which first aired on Starz in 2010, is based on the historical gladiator of the same name and his revolt against the Roman Republic. The series launched with a strong cast including Andy Whitfield in the lead role, alongside Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, and Jai Courtney. Later, Liam McIntyre, known for Star Wars, took over the role of Spartacus for the final two seasons.

Despite receiving mixed reviews – some critics found the storylines a bit weak, while others applauded its realistic and intricate depiction of the main character – the series Spartacus was a big hit for Starz. It broke the channel’s viewership records at the time, attracting 553,000 viewers, which was a remarkably high number for a premium channel then. The show currently holds a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer.

Spartacus‘s Prequel, Spartacus: House of Ashur, Has Outperformed Its TV Forebear

As a huge fan of Spartacus, I was thrilled to see it doing so well on streaming! It’s amazing how much interest there still is. And did you hear about the prequel series that came out last December? It’s a really cool idea – they’ve created a whole alternate timeline where Ashur actually survived that volcanic eruption from Season Two! It’s a fun way to expand the Spartacus universe.

The show’s exploration of alternative storylines really impressed reviewers. Currently, Spartacus: House of Ashur has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its cleverness and dedication to the over-the-top drama of the ancient world.

Good news for those who enjoyed the first season: a second season is likely on the way. Although Starz hasn’t officially announced a renewal, Nick E. Tarabay, who plays Ashur, revealed last December, before the premiere, that scripts for the next season were already completed.

During a Q&A with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Phil DeKnight explained that he typically plans television series to last between five and seven seasons, leaving plenty of story possibilities for the character Ashur.

You can currently watch Spartacus on streaming services like Netflix, or buy it from digital stores such as the Apple TV Store.
