I’m so hyped! Mortal Kombat is returning, and it looks even more brutal than before. Warner Bros. just released a new trailer for Mortal Kombat II, and it’s set to hit theaters on May 8, 2026. I can’t wait!
Okay, so the new trailer for the Mortal Kombat sequel is here, and it definitely looks like we’re heading straight for the Tournament! As a fan of the games, I was excited to see some new faces joining the cast – Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade both look fantastic, and Martyn Ford is absolutely terrifying as Shao Kahn. Thankfully, Joe Taslim is back as Noob Saibot, which is a huge win. Simon McQuoid is returning to direct, and the script this time comes from Jeremy Slater, who recently worked on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Overall, it’s shaping up to be a pretty promising continuation of the story.
The video starts with Johnny Cage explaining that heroism isn’t about fate or being special from birth, but about striving to be great. We then see Lord Raiden inform Johnny that he’s been selected to compete in Mortal Kombat.
The trailer then introduces Kitana, a new character and already a fan favorite, played by Adeline Rudolph. Scorpion warns her he doesn’t like fighting women, but she quickly assures him he won’t have that problem with her.
The Mortal Kombat Franchise Is Thriving
In Mortal Kombat II, Earthrealm’s warriors team up with Johnny Cage and are unexpectedly pitted against each other in a tournament. This sets the stage for an even greater conflict as they also struggle to defeat the ruthless emperor, Shao Kahn.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie introduced Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a man who didn’t know his family history or why he was being targeted by the assassin Sub-Zero. The film primarily set the stage for Mortal Kombat II, focusing on building the world and leading into the tournament. As director Simon McQuoid previously stated, he was determined to include the tournament in the film, believing audiences wouldn’t want to wait for a sequel to see it.
While the Mortal Kombat sequel isn’t expected in theaters until May, fans have received promising news about the series’ future. A new installment was announced back in October, with Jeremy Slater returning to write the script. The studio officially confirmed the project after evaluating the financial success of the first film – and the sequel’s initial, explicit trailer gaining over 100 million views in just one day definitely played a role.
Mortal Kombat II Introduces Fan-Favorite Characters Kitana & Jade
Fans of the Mortal Kombat video game series are especially excited about the return of Kitana and Jade in the upcoming sequel. These two characters are beloved icons within the game’s storyline, and their complex connection is one of the most interesting and heartwarming aspects of the Mortal Kombat world.
In the game series, Jade and Kitana are childhood friends, but their relationship becomes complicated when Jade starts working for the villain Shao Kahn. The new movie, Mortal Kombat II, will likely delve into this history. Actress Adeline Rudolph, who plays Kitana, described the on-screen connection with Tati Gabrielle (Jade) as having “completely different backstories and a constantly tested loyalty.” Rudolph also said it’s been “really fun” to portray the complexities of their relationship in the film.
Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on May 8, 2026.
