In recent years, Netflix has grown beyond simply being a streaming service. It’s become a major content creator, producing a wide variety of original movies and TV shows, and also securing deals to offer popular content from other studios. Now, Netflix is expanding into traditional movie theaters. In addition to buying the Egyptian Theatre and making a bid for Warner Bros. theaters – both of which show Netflix films – the company plans to release more of its content in cinemas.
A prime example of this trend was the huge success of last year’s animated film, K-Pop Demon Hunters, which shattered streaming and then box office records with a special sing-along theatrical release. Netflix also saw success bringing television to theaters, like when they released the finale of Stranger Things to sold-out audiences. This proves people enjoy watching shows on the big screen, and Netflix is continuing this approach in 2026 by premiering the new season of their popular series, One Piece.
Netflix has announced that the first two episodes of One Piece Season 2, titled Into the Grand Line, will be shown in theaters on March 10th—the same day the entire season becomes available on Netflix. Marketing for the new season emphasizes its large scope and promises to stay true to the popular manga by Eiichiro Oda. Given the epic story and detailed world, One Piece feels like a natural fit for the big screen. You can watch the announcement trailer below.
Okay, so Season 1 of One Piece really laid the groundwork, introducing us to Luffy and his crew as they sailed around the East Blue. But trust me, Season 2 is where things really start to get exciting! The trailers are promising a much deeper dive into the world Oda created in the manga, with tons of new characters and incredible locations. We’re already getting glimpses of some seriously cool stuff, like this massive whale named Laboon, and it looks like the first couple of episodes are going to focus heavily on him. Get ready, because it seems like they’re expanding the scope of the show in a big way!

Although One Piece is well-loved, it hasn’t become quite as popular as shows like K-Pop Demon Hunters or Stranger Things. It will be interesting to see how well the first two episodes do in theaters, and whether Netflix made the right decision to release its original series this way, especially since One Piece isn’t as widely known as Stranger Things. Regardless, it’s going to be fun to see the Straw Hat Pirates’ adventures on the big screen, and then continue the story with the remaining episodes on Netflix.
