Wicked’s Ethan Slater On How The Musical ‘Changed’ His Life (Besides His Relationship With Ariana Grande)

Since the debut of the Broadway musical “Wicked” last year, it appears that the cast members are enjoying the movie’s triumph. The film was a massive success and box office phenomenon, and the upcoming sequel, “Wicked: For Good “, seems to be highly anticipated by many. For Ethan Slater, this piece has held significant importance in his life, transcending beyond the starting point for his high-profile relationship with Ariana Grande. The musical theater actor recently shared insights on how “Wicked” transformed his life and what it personally meant to him.

As I walked the red carpet at San Diego Comic-Con, I had the pleasure of chatting with People Magazine to discuss the upcoming release of the Wicked Lego sets. You see, my love for musical theater predates my career – it was actually ignited long before I stepped onto the Broadway stage as the lead in The SpongeBob Musical back in 2017.

As a kid, seeing Wicked on Broadway left an indelible impression on me, and now, being a part of this film feels like a dream come true – a childhood aspiration realized.

It played a significant role in realizing my childhood dreams. I had the chance to watch Wicked on Broadway with what I believe was my fifth-grade class during a school trip before the Tonys. This was shortly after its opening, and we were among the first audiences to witness it.

Following his own performance in the movie version of the musical, he wanted to experience a complete loop and so brought his niece to watch the Broadway production, mirroring the experience he had with her at a similar age. He expressed: “I thought it would be fitting to recreate this moment for her, just as it was done for me.

Later, I took my niece there to celebrate her ninth birthday. It was a unique experience for me to see the show again through fresh eyes and imagine what it felt like when I first saw it. Now, being a part of Wicked has become an essential piece of my life, significantly altering it in a profound manner.

Without a doubt, “Wicked” has played a significant role in Slater’s life, given it was among the earliest musicals he ever attended. Given his successful career as a Broadway performer and now a screen actor, this initial experience likely influenced his preferences and enthusiasm. To star in the movie adaptation, which is seen by people worldwide, must be an extraordinary and surreal experience for him.

As Slater highlights the profound effect that the musical has had on his personal life, it’s equally significant to acknowledge another substantial transformation in his life due to Wicked. During the film production (available for streaming with an Amazon Prime subscription), he crossed paths with and eventually formed a relationship with Ariana Grande.

Ever since my high school sweetheart and I parted ways, I found myself drawn to the enchanting “thank u, next” singer. Our blossoming relationship on set has garnered quite a bit of buzz from the media, but through all the noise and excitement, we seem to be standing strong as we approach the release of Wicked: For Good. With fingers crossed, it appears this Tinseltown duo might just have staying power.

Given his profound affection for the musical “Wicked” and the impact it had on shaping his career trajectory, it’s clear that Ethan Slater’s life has been significantly influenced by the prequel to “The Wizard of Oz”. Professionally, the attention garnered by the movie is aiding in increasing his visibility. Notably, Slater will be joining the cast for the spinoff show of “The Boys”, titled “Gen V”, and he recently made a guest appearance on CBS’s “Elsbeth”. As his stardom grows, I’m curious to see how the enchantment of “Wicked” will continue to impact him.

Keep an eye out for Ethan Slater in “Wicked: For Good” when it premieres in theaters on November 21st, 2025. Until then, enthusiasts can catch up with the original “Wicked” film, which is available to stream with an Amazon Prime membership.
