Every Halloween season, fans eagerly await news from Michael Dougherty about the sequel to his popular 2009 film. While that movie is still some time away, fans now have another project to anticipate.
As a huge fan of the original, I’m so excited to hear they’re making a new installment! It’s going to be a collection of four fresh, scary stories set in that same world, and it’s coming out in Summer 2026. I can’t wait!
Dougherty and a team of writers and artists are creating a new collection of spooky stories centered around Sam, the beloved and mischievous trick-or-treater from the original Trick ‘r Treat (played by Quinn Lord). Trick ‘r Treat: Witching Hours aims to deliver fresh scares and memorable moments for fans of the first film.
Dougherty teamed up with Todd Casey and Zach Shields – the same writers he worked with on a 2015 project – to create two stories for this horror comic. The first, illustrated by Rafael Pimentel, is called “One Last Halloween.” It’s about residents of a nursing home who try to summon the Spirit of Halloween for one last Halloween celebration.
The creative team behind the story also worked with illustrator Andrea Mutti and colorist Valerio Alloro. Together, they crafted “Did You Miss Me?”, a spooky and unusual Halloween romance about a man who returns from the dead to be with his wife.
In “Harvest Moons,” creator Dougherty teams up with writer Curtis Waugh and artists El Garing and Ellie Wright for a story that’s truly out of this world. It follows a group of kids living on a space colony as they discover the meaning of Halloween for the very first time.
The book concludes with “Halloween Country,” a story co-written by Breehn Burns and Dougherty, with Burns also creating the illustrations. It’s a monster-focused tale about three cowboys who unintentionally awaken an old, powerful evil while working on a ranch in Wyoming.
Previous Trick ‘R Treat Comics Keep The Thrills Coming
The new graphic novel, Trick ‘r Treat: Witching Hours, continues the story begun with the 2009 adaptation of Michael Dougherty’s popular film. Written by Marc Andreyko and illustrated by Fiona Staples, it retells the film’s spooky and funny interconnected stories – including one about a school principal with a dark secret and another about a grumpy loner who learns a lesson about Halloween traditions.
The 2015 graphic novel, Trick ‘r Treat: Days of the Dead, was the first release to build upon the story of the original film. Like the movie, it features four scary tales, and Michael Dougherty again collaborated with writer Brian Andreyko, along with Todd Casey and Zach Shields. However, each story segment was illustrated by a different artist.
These stories cover a wide range of time periods, from the historical to the contemporary. “Seed” is a romantic tale set during the time of witch trials, while “Corn Maiden” is a cautionary story about growing up in the 1800s. “Echoes” is a dark and suspenseful detective story set in 1950s California, and “Monster Mash” is the most recent, telling the story of an unforgettable Halloween for two friends.
The new comic book, Trick ‘r Treat: Witching Hours, will be available in stores and online starting August 18, 2026.
