Mike Flanagan Teases Differences Between New Stephen King’s The Mist Adaptation & Frank Darabont’s Original Movie

Mike Flanagan’s The Mist is going to be very different from its previous adaptation.

The director known for horror films has hinted that his upcoming remake of Stephen King’s The Mist will be quite different from the 2007 movie. Mike Flanagan is directing and writing the screenplay for this new adaptation of King’s original 1980 story, which is being produced by Warner Bros.

So, I’m really excited about Mike Flanagan’s take on The Mist. He’s been posting on Bluesky, and it sounds like it’s going to be completely different from the 2007 film Frank Darabont did. He basically said the changes start right from the very beginning of the script, and he’s definitely taking the story in a new direction. Here’s what he had to say about it…

I quickly realized it’s impossible to guess what fans will debate (everyone needs to calm down – I just saw people getting very upset over some poorly made AI fan posters for The Exorcist). But to be clear, this isn’t a rehash of old ideas. The changes are apparent right from the beginning.

I’m a big fan of Darabont’s movie, and I don’t think it needs to be remade. That’s why I’m choosing to do something different.

Stephen King’s short horror novel tells the story of people in Brighton, Maine, struggling to survive when a strange mist brings terrifying creatures to their town. The first film adaptation, directed by Darabont, closely followed the book, highlighting both the monsters and the challenges faced by the survivors. Darabont also famously altered the story’s ending, which King himself applauded.

The story was adapted for television on Spike, where the mysterious mist wasn’t just filled with monsters, but also played with people’s minds, making them face their regrets. While critics had varying opinions, the show, titled The Mist, was ultimately canceled after its first season.

It’s currently unknown how closely Mike Flanagan’s adaptation will follow the original novella. It will differ significantly from the Darabont film right from the beginning, suggesting Flanagan is introducing new concepts to revitalize the story. Considering his successful history of adapting Stephen King’s work, this version promises to be captivating.

Mike Flanagan is currently working on several adaptations of Stephen King’s work, including The Mist. His Carrie series is set to debut on Prime Video in October, and he’s also developing a TV show based on The Dark Tower. Beyond King, Flanagan is writing Clayface for the DC Universe and will direct a new Exorcist film scheduled for release next year.

Honestly, it might be a while before we get many more details about Stephen King’s cut of The Mist. But from what he’s hinted at so far, it sounds like the changes he’s making will really give us a different, and impactful, story – something quite distinct from what Frank Darabont envisioned with his movie.
